MADHURI IS BACK WITH A BANG!
STARDUST.COM [ SUNDAY, Dec
6, 2003 12:20:54 AM ]
Madhuri Dixit is back with a
bang! The graceful actress will make a come back with Prakash Jhas socio
political thriller 'Rajniti'. Sources close to Mrs Nene, says that, "Madhuri
has liked the script and things are to be sorted out soon." Madhuri won
accolades for the stunning performance in 'Mrityudand'. Incidentally that
film was directed by Prakash Jha. Besides Prakash Jha, the buzz is also
around that Raj Kumar Santoshi and Rituparno Ghosh had a brief meeting with
Mrs Nene regarding their forthcoming venture. Chalo.. it's good for Madhuri
fans. The actress who mesmerized her admires with jhatkas and matkas will
continue her career as an actress, even after her mom-dom! Well, that's the
reason why Ram Gopal Verma made "Main Madhuri Dixit Bana Chahti Hoon..."
I don't want to know the sex of my child: Madhuri
FILMFARE.COM [ SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 2002 12:20:54 AM ]
MUMBAI: When other parents-to-be can't wait to find out whether it's a boy
or a girl, Madhuri and her doctor hubby don't want to kill the suspense by
going for ultrasonography to determine the sex of their child.
"It was a mutual decision between us. We don't want to kill the suspense at
this stage," says Madhuri. That's wise. Now we know, boy or girl, the child
is certainly going to make these parents proud.
Govinda pens a poem for Madhuri
FILMFARE.COM [ SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 2002 12:19:18 AM ]
Govinda dabbling in an alternative career is old news (yep he has become a
poet). But what's new is that this time he has devoted an entire stanza to
the dhak dhak girl.
When called on stage at the launch of Madhuri's Emami's range of beauty
products, the Hero No 1 was in full poetic mood. He took a piece of paper
and read out the poem specially written on Madhuri. Coming from the Hero No
1, it certainly sounds like poetic justice to Bollywood's Heroine No 1
Emami launches Beauty Secrets by Madhuri
By Taran Adarsh
Emami Ltd. created marketing history by launching its much-awaited Madhuri
range of herbal hair and skin care products at a lavish launch on November
7. The launch had Madhuri Dixit, Emami Co-Chairmen R.S. Agarwal and R.S.
Goenka, Alyque Padamsee, marketing consultant, and a galaxy of Bollywood
stars lending support to the Madhuri-created range of herbal products.
Emami will market the products under the brand 'Beauty Secrets by Madhuri'.
The product basket includes talc, hair oil, shampoos, skin cream and cold
cream. It's for the first time that Madhuri has lent her name to a range of
cosmetics.
Madhuri recalled how she had been collecting beauty tips and secrets across
the globe during her world tours, which she wanted to share with others.
"That is why the products have been branded 'Beauty Secrets by Madhuri' and
priced competitively," R.S. Agarwal stated.
Madhuri's changing interest: From movies to sports
FILMFARE.COM [ SUNDAY, AUGUST 04, 2002 1:27:18 PM ]
No, we are not suggesting that Madhuri is calling in quits to acting and has found a new passion in elsewhere.
In fact she is amongst the few Indian actresses' who have broken the 'married actress' barrier and treaded far ahead. But for all those who know her, she is one real 'sporting' spirit. And she is all out to rouse that adventurous streak in her.
Recently when she was asked by one of her fans what were her pastimes in the US, she said, besides cooking for hubby dear, she is trying to learn new things like scuba-diving, snorkelling and even sketching.
This lady surely seems to be on one adventure trail. We understand, her passion for art must have rooted from her ardent admirer - Hussain, but water sportswhere did that emerge from
Madhuri?
Madhuri Dixit turns
match-maker on TV
New
Delhi, July 12
Women seeking a life
partner can now turn to Sony Television, which in a gamble to jack up its
ratings, plans to launch an ambitious match-making show later this month.
Madhuri Dixit, who
earned 640,000 dollars for a single film becoming Bollywood's highest paid
actress in 1995, will anchor the match-making serial, "Kahin Na Kahin Koi
Hai", Sony chief Kunal Dasgupta said.
"This is not a
game show and we do not wish to reduce the institution of marriage to a game
show. We are trying here to be useful to society," Dixit told a news
conference.
The show will mark the
35-year-old film actress's television debut.
"I had earlier
been offered a chance to do television. I have been in your hearts for years
and I thought this programme would be a good forum for me to enter millions of
homes," said Dixit, who has now retired from Bollywood and has settled in
Los Angeles.
Sony TV is seen in
around 28 million households in India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and the
Middle-East and is also beamed to Africa, Britain and the United States.
Dixit and Sony chief
Dasgupta both insisted that the show was not a gimmick to prop up the network,
which faces vicious competition from Star network and Zee TV, which is
broadcast in 60 countries.
"This is an honest
effort by us to fulfill aspirations of people seeking partners," Dixit
said of the programme, to be beamed from July 29 by Sony in its markets here
and abroad.
The show pre-selects a
typical Indian family in search of a groom and then films the supervised
dating process until the suitors make a decision.
The young woman in
search of spouse has the choice of rejecting prospective suitors.
"This is a
homegrown process. It is sure to make new frontiers in television
programming," said 'Kahin Na Kahin..' director Anupama Mandloi, who has
255 researchers preparing databases for prospective brides window-shopping in
India's matrimonial markets.
"We are dealing
with real people here with their own sets of priorities and very real hopes
and insecurities," she added.
The organisers said the
show would be screened in four segments, each one culminating with marriage.
"After all,
match-making is a long process here," said Dasgupta.
Madhuri escapes blast
Apr 10,
2002
Now, this is called having a blast of a time, literally.
Madhuri Dixit was recently in Kolkata for some brand promotion. The venue was one of the
central localities of Kolkatta. Just hours before Madhuri was to appear onstage, there was
an explosion that stunned everyone in the vicinity. There were no injuries though and
Madhuri is as hale and hearty as ever. The program however was not disrupted and it
continued without further glitch. According to reports, investigations into the blast are
underway.
Madhuri Gobbles Ash Mumbai, March 11,
2002:
Insiders reveal that Madhuri Dixit-Nene has swallowed Aishwarya Rai with her
mind-blowing performance in Devdas. Ash is smarting after seeing a private trial last
week. Ash had tried her best, and then some more by suggesting scenes that weren't
in the original. Whether her wishes prevailed or not is not known. Sanjay Leela Bhansali
is known to be very stubborn when it comes to his films and is not the one to compromise.
I have been told that he convinced Ash about her character being more powerful (truth) and
that in the earlier versions, Chandramukhi had failed to outshine Paro (half-truth).
Madhuri's success is her own. Trade pundits give credit to the fact that Chandramukhi's is
a glamorous character and Ash is playing an ordinary Bengali girl. However, Vyjaynathimala
couldn't excel Suchitra Sen in the older version of Devdas.
The Showgirl: She stole countless hearts with her
million-dollar smile and exhilarating dances. Madhuri was the undisputed queen of the BO
for a long, long time.
The Actress: What sets Madhuri Dixit apart from most actresses is the power and energy she
translates through her performances. She is capable of conveying subtlety and
vulnerability to the same effect, too. Be it her high voltage persona in Dil, Beta, Lajja
and Mrityudand or lighthearted romanticism in Hum Aapke Hain Koun, Dil Toh Pagal Hai,
Madhuri is a winner.
The Person: Her rise to superstardom wasn't easy -- with concessions like the kissing
scenes in Dayavan and Vardi for good measure. Apart from that and her alleged link-up with
costar Sanjay Dutt, Madhuri has maintained a low profile. She is devoted to her family and
now strives to make a success out of her marriage to Los Angeles-based Dr Shriram Nene.
What Next? Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam (Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan), Devdas (Shah Rukh Khan,
Aishwarya Rai).
Madhuri To Play Amitabh's
Wife!
She's run around on screen and played the leading lady of umpteen films to date. But now
Madhuri Dixit is all set for a change in role. If sources are to be believed, the actress
is playing Uday Chopra's mother, and Amitabh Bachchan's wife in Yash Chopra's next magnum
opus. She seems to be varying her assignments too. She's all set to appear in a series of
music videos for the Rajshris as well. Way to go, Mads. We're sure your fans would love to
see you on the small screen as well!
Shubh Vivah in soup 3/8/02
Madhuri Dixit won't be playing matchmaker any more. The Delhi High Court has restrained
Sony TV from launching its programme Shubh Vivah, which was to be anchored by the actress.
A media consultant, who had challenged Sony Television from airing the serial Shubh Vivah
on grounds that it was developed on the idea disclosed by his company, has been given a
green signal by the court to telecast his serial Swayamvar first on small screen within
four months.
Madhuris secretary signs up
Amisha for his film |
06th Feb 2002 18.57 IST
By ApunKaChoice Bureau
Rakesh Nath alias Rikku, better known as Madhuri
Dixits secretary, has signed Amisha Patel and his son Karan Nath for his new film.
Rikkus son Karan made his debut with Paagalpan, which failed to click at the
Box office.
The film will be directed by Anees Bazmee. Other details are yet to be known. |
Madhuri's marriage is
rock steady!
There is a nasty side to stardom which surfaces every
now and then. Ever since Madhuri Dixit has married Dr Shriram Nene, speculation has been
rife about the fate of their long distance relationship.
"Any other human being would have gone mad by now, given all those crazy and
untrue stories of her so-called split," said a close family friend.
The rumour-mongers can take a walk now that Mrs. Nene is painting the town red with
hubby in tow. Judging by the number of restaurants the two have been spotted in, the Nenes
are doing fine.
"I can't claim to be a great cook but I am learning fast," confessed a
glowing Madhuri when fans caught her off-guard and quizzed her about her culinary skills.
If there's one film that Madhuri is keen that her husband should take time off his busy
schedule for, it's Sanjay Leela Bhansali's adaptation of Sarat Chandra Chatterjee's
classic Devdas. But the film is in the post-production stage and will be ready only
by May-end, when she is scheduled to take off for the Swiss Alps on a well-deserved break.
What Bhansali can't get over is not Madhuri endorsing a popular brand of cream just a
couple of months before his film's release, but Dr. Nene's curiousity when the director
mentioned his film's subject. "Hey, but who is Sarat?" he asked innocently.
Rest assured, Dr. Nene, he isn't one of your spouse's co-stars?
The glow about Madhuri
It was a long wait. But we did get a glimpse of the new Emami
girl.
Madhuri Dixit walked on to the sets, togged up in a maroon outfit, hair falling around
her face in waves, to face the media about her very first endorsement. "I thought they [Emami] had the
right intentions. They are committed to what they are doing. That's why I chose to endorse
their products," the Ek do teen
girl replies, when asked why she chose Emami.
Madhuri has been working in tandem with the Research and Development department of
Emami for over a year now. Mohan Goenka of Emami says, "We opened a special R&D
department in Mumbai for the team to work with Madhuri. She has been sharing her
experiences with the department to help develop a product to match market
requirement."
"Beauty is my business and I have given my creative inputs to the Emami research
team. I used their products: Some were good, some weren't. All of them are herbal, so
there's no question of them harming your skin," says Madhuri.
With her new responsibility, one wonders how she manages to juggle her time as actress
and wife: "It isn't difficult. It's fun trying to juggle time between home, acting
and now modelling."
Madhuri will endorse a line of beauty care products called Beauty Secrets by Madhuri Dixit. The line
includes five products, three shampoos, a soap, skin cream and hair oil. Besides the
advertisement commericals, Madhuri will also shoot a calendar that will be brought out
soon. Incidentally, the commercial is said to have cost Emami approximately Rs 40 million.
Goenka is confident that this celebrity endorsement will be a shot in Emami's arm:
"I predict a sharp increase in sales. Madhuri endorsing our product will definitely
be of great help to us." Goenka adds that Emami has made a long term commitment to
Madhuri Dixit.
Bachchan, Madhuri in Mira Nairs next?
17th Jan 2002 12.13 IST
By ApunKaChoice Bureau
After the critical and popular success of Monsoon Wedding, Mira
Nairs next film would most probably star mega-superstars Amitabh Bachchan and
Madhuri Dixit.
The film would be a typical Hindi mainstream film with lots of melodious songs and dances.
According to Mira Nair, it is a subject only Madhuri can do justice to and if the rumors
are to be believed, Madhuri has given her nod to star in the film.
Mira Nair is even thinking of casting the Big B in a grand role and if her efforts bear
fruit, it would be the first time that Bachchan and Madhuri would be seen together in a
film in major roles.
Madhuri had a special appearance in David Dhawans Bade Miyan Chhote Miyan,
which starred Bachchan.
AB, Madhuri in Mira Nair's next?
Monsoon
Wedding has won Mira Nair another fan. And this time it is Madhuri Dixit herself.
Madhuri is reported to have accepted the lead in Nair's next project -- a typical Hindi
mainstream film with lots of songs and dances.
Apart from negotiations with Madhuri, it is believed that Mira is also in talks with
Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Akshaye Khanna and may also rope in the Big B for a special
appearance.
Madhuri:
No more fida over Hussain
Trust
our filmi folks with their fickle ways! Till yesterday Madhuri was proud to be M F
Hussain's muse. He proudly claimed to have seen Hum Aapke Hain Koun 75 times, and that
only made Madhuri blush beetroot red. She even enjoyed his company on the sets. They even
inaugurated a painting museum in Hyderabad together. Gaja Gamini was scripted and Madhuri
offered to play the lead role in the film. What better launch could M F Hussain have as a
director! The painter wielded the megaphone. Madhuri doled out chunk dates and religiously
did whatever she was asked to do for the film.
But when she learnt that M F Hussain's film was turning out as abstract as his painting,
her enthusiasm faded. She began to play tough. So much so that whenever M F Hussain
spotted a journalist on the sets, he requested them to leave so that Madhuri did not waste
her time with them. With great difficulty the film was completed. Premiere was held.
Guests and relatives made it a point to be present but the one missing was the leading
lady herself. "Neither Madhuri nor I have received any invitation to the
premiere," complained Madhuri's indispensable secretary Rikku. Insiders insisted that
the reason why Madhuri abstained from attending the premiere was because she did not want
to be associated with a film that had head nor tail.
The final nail in the coffin was when Madhuri Dixit rebuffed M F Hussain at a special show
of Pati Patni Aur Woh recently where the painter and his muse were invited. Hussain asked
Dixit to sit with him. But Madhuri declined saying that she had her mother to keep her
company. He coaxed and cajoled her further but she refuse to budge from her stand. Hussain
finally had to give up and watch the play all alone!
Sanjay: Mad about Madhuri
Madhuri Dixit holds a special place in Sanjay Dutt's scheme of things. In
fact he wants to work with her again and even requested his favourite director Mahesh
Manjrekar to cast them as a pair. Now, since Mahesh Manjrekar has already signed Madhuri
for the English version of Astitva, Sanjay Dutt is hoping to be cast in it as the lead. A
thorough professional that Madhuri is, once that she has agreed to do the film no way is
she going to back out of it. But insiders insist that Dixit has told Manjrekar to cast
Sanjay in the role that Mohnish did. Madhuri Dixit and Sanjay Dutt first met when they
were signed for Ilaaka. The couple went to do several films together. Love bloomed on the
sets of Saajan. They were about to tie the knot when Sanjay Dutt got arrested. Dixit chose
to cut-off all ties with the Dutt leaving him absolutely disdained and disillusioned.
Neena Gupta plans to rope Madhuri
Actress and television star Neena Gupta is all set to wield the megaphone yet again. No
this time it is not for the small but the big screen. And guess who she has approached for
the woman oriented theme of her film. Our ace dhak-dhak actress Madhuri Dixit Nene! The
script has already been handed over to Madhuri and considering that the script entirely
focuses on the central character, the actress should not have any objections to do it. But
what if she turns down Neena Gupta? Neena already has someone in mind! And she is none
other than herself!
Assam elephants get sympathiser in Madhuri Dixit
Press Trust of India
New Delhi, November 28: Concerned over elephants being killed "by the
dozens" in Assam, superstar Madhuri Dixit has asked the state government to mobilise
its police force to arrest those who were "poisoning" the pachyderms and take
steps to conserve the forests.
In a letter to Assam's forest minister G C Langthasa, the Bollywood star said she was
saddened to learn that within 70 days, 31 elephants had been killed. "Please don't
turn a blind eye to animal suffering. Please stop this mass murder which is shocking the
world by mobilising of police force to arrest those who are poisoning elephants," the
Gajagamini actress said.
Dixit is one of the celluloid stars who had announced her dissociation with any film
project where in animals were being ill-treated during shooting. Dixit has lately also
associated herself with People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) as an active
volunteer, a spokesman of PETA said in Mumbai.

Madhuri's marital dilemma (11/26/01)
Madhuri Dixits
marriage may not be working as she expected!! Not long ago she talked of not signing any
more films, issued ultimatum to her producers to complete the films by
the end of this year, as she wanted to be a mother. Madhuri said that she would continue
to work but the producers would bear the cost of her air travel and stay in India. This
long distance marriage might have been interesting in the beginning but things seem to
have become boring. Reports are that used to a retinue of half a dozen persons at her beck
and call, not to speak of her dependable mother, her secretary Rikku, her producers and
the unit boys, Madhuri found the going tough. Her life without `help` has been described
as `slumming` and the best catch for the Maharashtrian Sarswat Brahmini, Dr
Sriram Nene has yet to complete his
education. While not much is known about the reasons of this failure, and everything being
uttered is hearsay, gossip, speculation and uninformed guess it is a confirmed fact that
Dixit Babe has decided to stay put in Mumbai till at least March 2002. She has also
started signing more films including Yash Chopras film with Amitabh Bachchan, Mahesh
Manjrekars English version of Astitva and a Malayalam film
with Mohanlal. She has also accepted to anchor Sonys show Shubh Vivaah
that, if successful, might keep her busy throughout 2002!
Madhuri's posters burnt
by BJP cadre protesting Lajja
Bhopal, September 3: A group of BJP workers on Monday burnt an effigy of Bollywood
film-maker Rajkumar Santoshi and posters of film actress Madhuri Dixit to express their
protest against what they described as "objectionable dialogues" against Hindu
gods and goddesses in Santoshi's latest movie Lajja.
Police said the BJP workers led by Rameshwar Sharma, leader of the party in the Bhopal
municipal corporation, were trying to move towards Raaz Talkies, where Lajja is
being screened, when they were stopped in view of prohibitory orders in force because of
the monsoon session of the Madhya Pradesh Assembly.
According to BJP workers, Madhuri's posters were burnt because the "objectionable
dialogues" against Hindu gods and goddesses were uttered by her in the movie.
"Lajja" is also being screened at the local Sangam cinema hall, but no
demonstration was held there.
This is the second time this year that a demonstration against a Hindi film has been
staged in the city. On July 19, activists of the Youth Congress had staged a violent
demonstration against Hindi blockbuster Gadar.
Madhuri moves to the small screen
Mumbai, September
1: Leading film actress Madhuri Dixit is all set to make her debut appearance on
television as the anchor of a show called Shubh Vivah. Hosted by Sony, the
programme is scheduled to go on air in October and would be country's first ever reality
show.
"The concept of the show is totally home grown. Shubh Vivah is about real
people, their dreams and aspirations," Sony's senior vice president Rekha Nigam said.
On the first day of the shoot of the show at Film City here on Friday, Dixit said,
"What attracted me to Shubh Vivah was the uniqueness of the concept. I am
looking forward to working with the Sony team."
The mood was upbeat on the set. After the customary pooja, Dixit appeared before the
camera and looked composed and natural.
Madhuri to do a matrimonial show
Madhuri Dixit may finally make her debut on the idiot box! Yes, the dhak-dhak actress
has conceded to host a show for Sony TV's Shubh Vivah where she will interview just
married couples and ask them questions about what made them choose each other as life
partners and what qualities about one another do they like and hate et al! Madhuri since a
long time had longed to do television. In fact she had literally nodded to do Zee's flop
show Sawaal Dus Karod Ka till Zee backed out at the last minute saying they could not
cater to the actress's unreasonable demands. Anyway, she may as well make the most her
status before it gets washed out completely.
Madhuri's marriage on the rocks
- Thursday, June 21, 2001
Ek Do Teen....
Looks like the countdown to the jhatka queen Madhuri Dixit's married life has
begun. Well close on the heels of the rumour that Madhuri had taken maternity leave from
Bhansalis film Devdas, another rumour seems to have taken to the streets
of Mumbai, that its not maternal trouble which shes having but marital.
It seems Dr. Nene, a US based heart surgeon, isnt doing such a great job pulling his
beautiful wife's heartstrings. Bollywood Ki Biwi, Madhuri Dixit has been hardly spending
any time with him. She has been clocking up frequent flyer miles between Mumbai and US,
for shoots and more shoots. It does not look like the kind Nene has taken too kindly to
these transatlantic jaunts.
According to insiders, he sighed and said, "Dil To Pagal Hai". And guess what
Madhuri has been going round saying to friends? . She has been openly telling friends that
she wants to get back to films full-time and would like to go to the US only "once in
a while".
Now this sure the complete reversal of what she was saying in the earlier months of her
marriage. Mrs. Nene had declared that she would settle down with her doctor husband in the
US and come to India, once in a while" for her film commitments. ???
But hang on folks.... there is more to the rumour going round the place. The news is that
the arch lights are not the only reason that has taken Madhuri away from her
Saajan. If industry sources are to be believed, then Madhuri has been crooning
akhiyan Milaoon, Kabhi Akhiyan Churaun to a Delhi based model.
Surprised???
He apparently met Madhuri while she was in Delhi shooting. Whats more the hunk also
shoots a lot in Mumbai.... which makes it easy for them to spend more time together.
Here's hoping things get better on Madhuris marriage front, that is if the rumour is
to believed! And if indeed the stork is visiting her, Well Madhuri Mama to be, for you and
your Nene, Marital trouble is a big No No, for the sake of the babe atleast!
Madhuri to play mom in Yash Chopra's film
12th June 2001 20.18 IST
By ApunKaChoice Bureau
Yash Chopra has signed Madhuri Dixit to play a mom in his next film.
According to Bollywood Grapevine, the Chopras were looking for a high-profile actress to
star opposite the charismatic Amitabh Bachchan. Their first choice was Sridevi. But the
role wasn't meaty enough for the Thunder Thighs to contemplate a comeback. So
they decided to approach Madhuri.
Initially, Mrs. Nene turned down the offer. But Madhuri's hubby talked her out of her
reluctance. Mr. Nene reportedly reminded her that she owed the Chopras a good turn. And
that did the trick. Madhuri relented.
Madhuri plays Uday Chopra's mom in the film.
Dilruba For Madhuri
Mumbai, June 4: Even as M F Husain moves over to his new film, Madhuri Dixit attracts
another man: Dilip Chhabria.
The film buffs may not know much about him, but film stars (specially those who love cars)
and car lovers all over the world known him for a record 450, individually designed and
crafted cars going by the brand name of DC. Each car is a marvel of automobile
engineering. And this man has got these cars made in a span of 8 years!
He may take a Tata Sierra and totally redesign it naming it Arya or take a Mercedec Benz
and change its contours and design. Isa, Li'l, Arya and Arka are some of those traffic
stoppers. These custom made cars are naturally much more expensive and are considered
bigger status symbols than your regular Merc or BMW.
To return to his second love - the first is, obviously, cars - Madhuri Dixit-Nene,
Chhabria would like to gift Madhuri a car specially designed for her. He has already
thought of a name for her (the car, stupid!): Dilruba.
He doesn't want anything in return.
Chhabria may not be as old as Husain but is certainly on the wrong side of fifty.
Madhuri's Hot Affair
Mumbai, May 29: Grapevine has it that Madhuri Dixit-Nene is having a clandestine affair
with a model based in Delhi. One doesn't know how correct the rumour is - there is nothing
strange about a married woman falling in love - but every time it is repeated something is
being added. I have known Madhuri from the days she was struggling and always found
her holding middle class values. Everyone knows that after she became a top heroine and
was romantically linked with Sanjay Dutt and her secretary Rakesh Nath. She disassociated
with Sanjay only after his imprisonment and Dutts have never forgiven her that. That again
was a middle class insecurity of Madhuri who wouldn't risk her career, life and reputation
for love.
But middle class morality has undergone a lot of changes and Madhuri moved up after
Tezaab. Anything can happen.
Madhuri Doing Yash Film
Mumbai, May 29: In her desire to play a variety of meaningful roles, Madhuri Dixit has
returned to Yash Chopra. Few know that Madhuri was not happy when, despite her feelers,
Chopras signed up Aishwarya Rai to play the lead in Mohabbatein. Now, she is doing a
Yashraj film that will be directed by the old man himself. Her costars will be Amitabh
Bachchan and (you have guessed it) Uday Chopra! It is not known whether Madhuri will be
the heroine opposite a much younger Uday or he will have a new girl opposite him. However,
this will be a re-launch of the guy at the hands of his father and may do more for him
than did brother Adi's Mohabbatein.
Madhuri Dixit: No full stops yet!
Banish the thought: Madhuri Dixit isn't packing her bags and heading back to the US of A
and hubby Shriram Nene after Devdas is canned and delivered. She has just accepted an
offer from Yash Chopra for a stellar role in a film that will co-star Amitabh Bachchan and
the producer-director's son, Uday Chopra.
Clearly, as far as Madhuri's career is concerned, it certainly isn't finito yet. And that,
according to reports filtering in from Los Angeles, is causing the good doctor of LA
immense heartburn. He is no admirer of Hindi films. Now that his wife seems to be bent on
keeping the shuttling-between-LA-and-Mumbai arrangement going for a few more years, there
could be reason for him to hate them all the more.
One, however, can understand Madhuri's eagerness to keep her options open in Mumbai. Yeh
Raaste Hai Pyaar Ke, in which she plays the role of a married woman who's gone over the
edge, is in post-production, while the Devdas shoot is reportedly progressing well after
many a hiccup.
If these two films do click, deadly Dixit could be the flavour of the season once again.
She obviously doesn't want to lose out on the resultant fun by opting out of the race
completely. Good thinking, Mads! But do we hear Dr Nene say, na na?
HUBBY MAKES FOR A HAPPY BIRTHDAY
Thursday May 24, 12:45 PM
MADHURIS had enough of play-acting. Now shes ready to play the perfect biwi
again in real life and having packed her bags has flown off to LA. Shriram Nene is a happy
hubby and plans to whisk his beautiful wife away to some exotic place where they can ring
in her birthday together. Last year the couple flew off to an island tucked away in the
middle of nowhere and far away from all prying eyes, enjoyed a second honeymoon. "It
was a great way to celebrate your birthday," Madhuri had blushed 12 months ago. Well,
we hope this birthday will be even greater!
Madhuri rushes back to U.S.
Hey guys, hadn't we reported sometime back how
Madhuri was on a signing spree, taking on newer movies and trying to delay the inevitable?
It has been nearly six months that she is in India. Looks like the lambee judaai has upset
Madhuri's doctor hubby back in US. And though the two have been in touch all this time
over the phone and more recently through chat on the Internet, Dr Nene must be eager to
convert the virtual to reality. He seems to have run out of patience this time. So, it is
home-run time for Mrs. Nene. The dhak dhak dame who was supposed to leave in June is
rushing to the US by April end, two months ahead of schedule! And she has put all her
Bollywood plans on hold. These include Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Devdaas with Shah Rukh Khan
and Aishwarya Rai, Deepak Shivdasani's Yeh Raaste Hai Pyaar Ke and a recently signed
filmed with Mahesh Manjrekar. The fate of the new ventures hangs in balance till Madhuri
returns sometime in July. But movies can wait, because when a doctor needs nursing, it is
obviously an emergency situation!
Madhuri in Astitvas English version |

The buzz is that Mahesh Manjrekar has roped in none
other than Madhuri Dixit-Nene for the English version of his critically acclaimed film Astitva.
Manjrekar has reportedly signed a Hollywood studio to produce the film this time.
So Madhuri hasnt really packed off her bags from Bollywood. Thats a great news
for her fans that she has decided to do a role as challenging as this one.
But the question is why was Tabu neglected, even though she had won a National Award for
her role.

Madhuris pregnancy puts Devdas on hold
|
09th May 2001 18.05 IST
By ApunKaChoice Bureau
Finally, it can be confirmed that Madhuri
Dixit Nene is expecting.
According to the reports, Mrs. Nene has opted stay away from work on medical grounds for
at least six months.
For Sanjay Leela Bhansali, director of Devdas, in which Madhuri is playing a lead
role, this news could be a source of many a headache, as Sanjay had juggled Shahrukh Khan,
Aishwarya Rai and Jackie Shroff's dates in order to accommodate Madhuri, who had promised
to give Devdas top priority.
The jinxed Bhansali project, which has encountered more than its share of problems since
it went on the floors, will have to wait until Mads returns from maternity leave.

'Devdas' gets another jolt
25th Feb 2001 19.48 IST
By ApunKaChoice Bureau
Sanjay Leela Bhansali is one worried man
these days.
Sanjay's pet project, Devdas after a series of interruptions resumed shooting and
was progressing smoothly when problem again, this time in the form of Madhuri Dixit,
stalled shooting for fifteen more days.
Apparently, Madhuri was not impressed with the dress ensembles designers Abu Jani and
Sandeep Khosla had readied for Mads. The apparels were predominantly, as typical of
Abu-Sandeep, in white and off-white color. Madhuri felt that the light shades would not
stand up to the screen like bright, vibrant colors and sent back the clothes for a rework.
Madhuri is also believed to have given an ultimatum to Bhansali to finish the schedule as
soon as possible so that she can go and join her husband in the US.
Plagued by problems perennially, Sanjay sits quietly on the gigantic sets of Devdas
portraying 18th century Calcutta, looking a perfect 'Devdas' himself.
"First they were getting her married every year and now
they are claiming she's pregnant for over nine months
!"
Momma
Dixit smashes rumours of Madhuri's pregnancy!
It's
all over the place. The sizzling news that India's numero uno actress Madhuri Dixit was in
the family way. And it was a rumour which has been persisting for quite a few months now.
A couple of websites had even published the report that Madhuri had given an ultimatum to
her producers to complete their films within a certain time frame so that her pregnancy
wouldn't affect their films in any way. And not to say later that they weren't given
sufficient warning. Principal among the producers being Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who was
making 'Devdas' with the actress he'd always wanted to work with.
However,
Madhuri herself looked far from pregnant each time the press happened to meet her. The
last couple of occasions being at the shooting of Deepak Shivdasani's 'Yeh Raaste Hain
Pyaar Ke' in Delhi where she drove media and fans alike, insane with her elegant good
looks. And more recently, at the Filmfare Awards function in Mumbai where she looked
stunning and slim enough to pass as an adolescent. Still, the rumours dogged her. Being
written about in print and on the web.
When we
contacted the Dixit household to get the lowdown on Madhuri's alleged pregnancy, the fiery
mama Dixit blasted. "They have been saying she's two months pregnant, she's two
months pregnant for over five months now. That should make her ten months pregnant. First
they were getting her married every year and now they are claiming she's pregnant for over
nine months
! In any case she has been here in India for over four months now. Don't
tell me that a pregnancy doesn't show up in four months. It should have been showing by
now. People write nonsense all the time. It is not true and it is not something to hide.
When it happens, we will be the first to announce to the world. After all, it is a happy
occasion," exploded mama Dixit in her inimitable style. Squashing all rumours of her
daughter becoming mommy Nene.
So as of
now, that's that. Until the next round of rumours
or the reality
whichever may
come first. -- Omar Qureshi
Stop That
Gawd, tongues just go yakety yakety. If one more soul tells us that Madhuri Dixit's
pregnant, we're gonna bust a few blood vessels. Because she's not. She's neck-deep into
shooting for Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Devdas during the nights. While the days are spent
surfing the net, whispering sweet-nothings to Shriramji Nene on Valentine's day. Plus it
was an oh-so-chweet sight to see Madhuritai dial M for Nene for her lifeline question on
KBC.
Hits and Mrs: Madhuri's Dil Da Mamla
Pankaj Kapoor
Valentine's Day. The perfect day to celebrate love in your kind of way. Dreams unlimited
notwithstanding, it was a perfect case of Mein Yahan Tum Kahan for Ms Dixit-Nene. ``It's
so boring. Here I am stuck at a shoot, and we can't be together on Valentine's Day,''
sighs Madhuri on the sets of Yeh Raaste Hain Pyar Ke.
In town to shoot for the Deepak Shivdasani-directed film which co-stars Ajay Devgan and
Preity Zinta, Madhuri might have been tied down by reams of reel on Valentine's Day, but
her heart goes on... much beyond days and dates assigned to matters of the heart. ``To be
very frank, I didn't have a clue about Valentine's Day till fairly recently. My idea of
romance is being with someone you are in love with... it could be a candle-lit dinner,
walking hand-in-hand on the beach or skiing side by side,'' elaborates the dhak-dhak
damsel at her Inter-Continental suite.
Interestingly, Madhuri has tried her hand (or should we say feet?) at skiing in the US
along with hubby Shriram Nene. Without much success though! ``I just couldn't keep my
balance and kept on falling over,'' she recalls, ``I still haven't managed to get it
right, but I certainly won't stop before I get the hang of skiing.''
Besides snow-clad slopes, it's the lady's kitchen which appears to be cooking up a
potboiler. Madhuri's marriage, of course, is still at that good old stage in which a
husband appreciates whatever is cooked at home. ``I am enjoying my cooking and there
hasn't been any criticism until now. But you never know! Well, three years down the line
he might say `namak kam hai!' Incidentally the last dish Madhuri prepared for Mr Nene was
a Maharashtrian variant of pasta, ``because he just loves pasta!''
Currently taken up with Hum Aapke Hain Sanam, which features Salman and Shah Rukh Khan,
and Devdas, which also has Shah Rukh Khan, besides Aishwarya, Madhuri longs to work in
films of the likes ofMughal-E-Azam. ``The language, the whole set-up of the film is so
amazingly rich,'' gushes the Gajagamini, ``And yes, I am excited about my role as
Chandramukhi in Devdas. Though I haven't seen K L Saigal's Devdas, a lot of research has
gone into the character of Chandramukhi.''
Even as the actress in her takes over, Madhuri's magic continues to work wonders. And not
just in India. After all, if you're mad about Madhuri, distance has made a certain heart
surgeon's heart in Atlanta grow fonder
Madhuri Dixit: Very Much In Competition! (02/14/01)
Many thought that the 'dhak-dhak' girl's career in filmdom is over and done with and a
comeback is something that looked more impossible once she tied the knot. But all of you
have got her wrong. Madhuri is engaged in making a comeback for herself on silver screen
and her million dollar smile is gonna get your heart going 'dhak dhak' once again. The
lady has lost tremendous weight and looks as fresh as ever and her entrance and presence
still makes a difference making the ambience a lot more glamorous than what it would've
been without her. This is what we witnessed at the press conference of 'Yeh Raste Pyar Ke'
held at the Inter Continental hotel, New Delhi. Way to go Mads
especially since you
have it in you.
Madhuri a winner all the way! (02/12/01)
Madhuri sure is a winner when it comes to her popularity both among her fans and
co-stars. The reason? Her naked honesty.
Star Plus telecast a special episode of KBC featuring Sachin Tendulkar and Madhuri Dixit
recently. Since there have been other bigwigs , viewers took it for granted that it must
have been a 'fixed' one when Madhuri won 50 lakh on the show. She did use her lifeline
though, calling none other than hubby Dr Sriram Nene to answer a question about matters of
the 'heart'.
"No they don't even let you know the kind of questions they are going to ask you. I
was nervous as hell for three full days I was browsing through books on general
knowledge", the numero uno actress revealed.
But did she anticipate the questions?
Flashing her 5000 watt smile she quipped, " They asked for my bio-data to find out
about my areas of interest, my favourite films and books and accordingly framed the
questions". Refuting charges of partiality, she snapped, "And please don't
underestimate the intelligence level of other stars people like Aamir, Sonali and Shahrukh
are well read too apart from being good actors. Of course actors are asked relatively
simpler questions".
So now we know why the gorgeous diva with the million dollar smile has the entire nation
eating out of her hands! It's her sincerity towards work, honesty about herself and candor
about her co stars that make her the unparalleled empress of emotions in reel and real
lives!
Madhuri confirms her pregnancy
07th Feb 2001 14.12 IST
By ApunKaChoice Bureau
Finally, the news has been confirmed by,
none other than, the mama-to-be.
Madhuri Dixit is pregnant. She has requested her producers to finish off their films
before she starts showing. The two producers to get the request note are Sanjay Leela
Bhansali and Deepak Shivdasani.
In Bhansali's Devdas Madhuri has quite a few dance scenes which she wants to
complete first. Her co-stars Aishwarya and Shah Rukh are cooperating with her in sparing
dates to accommodate shooting of those portions of the film that have Mads.
Mads has also requested her co-stars of Shivdasani's Yeh Raaste Hain Pyar Ke, Ajay
Devgan and Preity Zinta to cooperate with her in finishing the film as soon as possible

Madhuri Dixit - Kaun Banega Anchor? 12/2/00
Talking in individual terms, the game show 'Sawaal Dus Crore Ka' sure didn't live up to
expectations. Everything from it's mere conception and unhealthy aim of competing with
'KBC' went against it. And who was to blame for all this? Its anchors Anupam And Manisha
solely were blamed for the show doing badly. We've heard a lot of things when a pic is a
hit. "I would like to thank this one and that one and the entire team for 'tis a team
effort." Then why not over here as well? 'SDCK' was a sloppy show and now it is being
totally revamped with a re-consideration of having Madhuri as host. So much so for the
future of 'SDCK.' Hope people will come out wiser at some point in time.
Gajagamini: Will the film live up to its Honour? 11/30/00
The much-talked-about-but-never-saw-light-of-day film, Gajagamini finally
sees release this week after a star-studded premiere Thursday night in Mumbai.
The MAMI has been kind enough to give the film its due and showcases it as a part of
its closing ceremony on 30th November. Amidst the excitement of the films release
also lies the fate of Mrs. Nenes career. This could easily be the highlight of her
career after Pukar survived, albeit mar-mar ke. And so heres looking
forward to another run from the dhak-dhak girl.
Madhuri e-mails a transcontinental marriage
AISHWARYA MAVINKURVE
PUNE, NOVEMBER 16: The stars shimmered and the flashbulbs would not stop. The
conference hall at the Hotel President held a handful of the best known faces of the
Bollywood film industry - a radiant Madhuri Dixit in a shimmering white salwar kameez,
dulcet-voiced Asha Bhonsale, a cheerful Kajol, Tanuja and the man whose lens had captured
their captivating beauty and also the reason they were in the city on Thursday, renowned
photographer Gautam Rajadhyaksha. From a charming Madhuri admitting with that stunning
smile that ``I'm in the most ideal situation now'' to the warm affection between Tanuja
and her daughter Kajol, the stars showed that they also had an endearingly human side to
them.
Known for her rich versatile voice, the bubbly Asha revealed her impish sense of humour
from quick-witted remarks to poking gentle fun at the Marathi of the stars present. Said
she self-deprecatingly, ``Gautam can make people look so beautiful, they cannot recognise
me when they meet me. He is a magician with the camera. There have been instances of
husbands who have wondered whether the women in the photograph are the ones they
married.''
And it was again Asha who with trademark wit grabbed the mike to ask Madhuri the
question uppermost in most minds. ``How do you feel after marriage?'' Said the dhak-dhak
girl, ``To have a career is good but I'm also enjoying my family life. I don't care if it
has affected my popularity. I'm working on three films and am looking forward to them''
Isn't it difficult to manage a trans-continental marriage? ``Haven't you heard of
e-mail?,'' is the quick reply.
Kajol when the question was put to her too agreed, `` I am definitely more controlled,
more content after marriage.'' While Tanuja added a quick, ``I don't even realise she's
married, she's in my house all the time. One doesn't ever lose a daughter.''
That each of them share a special relationship with Rajadhyaksha was evident from the
light banter and easy camaraderie that flowed between them. But by Rajadhyaksha's own
admission, ``Madhuri has been my most retentive models.'' While she said,``I remember for
my first session with Rajadhyaksha when although I had how although I did not have a
professional make-up artiste had assured me that it's not the make-up, it's who you are
that matters. He manages to catch the inner self.''
Madhuri is Manisha's new love!
15th Nov 2000
This is something, dear pets, that even hardened gossipmongers had hiccups
while digesting. But then, to say that strange are the ways of showville would be the
biggest understatement of the millennium.
After all, weren't Madhuri Dixit and Manisha Koirala sworn enemies till last week, so
much so that they dreaded seeing each other's face? That's the way it's always been ever
since Nepali babe Koirala shot to the limelight with films like 1942 A Love Story,
Bombay and Khamoshi in the mid '90s and haughtily declared she's No. 1 and
nothing else. And to pack in the punch, Manisha had then directly attacked Madhuri, saying
in print that Sexy Dixie had been No. 1 for only a year (between the Sridevi phase and
Koirala's own upsurge, that is).
But that was yesterday. Take a look at what's happening today. On the sets of
Rajkumar Santoshi's Lajja, we were zapped to find the two Ma'am Ms getting along
like a house on fire! And guess what Manisha's catchline was: she's Madhuri's biggest
fan!!
Frustrated at the patch-up, wicked souls? Don't be. From what we heard, Zee TV is
jacking up its offer to Mads for hosting Sawaal Dus Crore Ka (remember, she had
rejected the show before it fell on Manisha's lap?). The reason? Simply this, that they
don't feel Manisha is upto the mark as a hostess. And Madhuri might just give the nod this
time, considering the crazy sum being offered.
If that be, we can only visualize the Madhuri-Manisha equation going from red to bright
chilly in complexion!
M.F. Hussain: A Heart for Art!
15th Nov 2000
M.F. Hussain is in the early stages of planning his second film that will be based on an
autobiography. And this time he is disappointed in not having Madhuri be a part of the
entire project, as the Queen Bee of Bollywood, is now a married lady and will
be busy shunting between India and the US of A. His debut film Gajagamini, a
Madhuri-Shah Rukh starrer will be premiered on December 1 amidst exhibitors of paintings,
books and photographs. So much for art. Can a hand that paints so well, be able to meet
the same fate in filmmaking too? Now thats the question!
Medha Patkar has Madhuri's shoulders to lean
07th Nov 2000 21.41 IST By Tanuka Chakraverty
Medha (Narmada) Patkar's tears did not go
waste. The Supreme Court's nod to the Sardar Sarovar Project has made an impact on bigger
mortals whose hue and cry will reach some relevant ears. When you read the following you
will know what we mean.
None less than Madhuri Dixit has shown keenness to complete Engineer, a film based
on the havocs dams cause to people living on riverbanks. Arvind Swamy is the male lead
opposite Madhuri.
The story of the film is set in a village that faces the threat of perishing if the dam is
constructed. Madhuri plays a village woman, fighting against insensitive authorities that
do not seem to be concerned with villagers' woes. She is left numb when she learns that
her husband is also a part of the dam project.
Engineer to be directed by Gandhi Krishna has been in the news for long. First they
had offered the film to Madhuri, but she declined. Then they put the film on hold. After
the Supreme Court order on the Narmada dam project, Gandhi approached Madhuri with renewed
interest and this time, she did not refuse him. This time, it was her Maharashtrian bahen
Medha Patkar and her cause that attracted Madhuri to the film and she is too eager to
complete it.
Madhuri's got her priorities right! Oct 28,2000
Marriage no bar, Madhuri Dixit has given a terrific performance in Rajkumar Santoshi's Lajja.
That's just peachy. Except that the other leading ladies of the
film -- Manisha, Mahima, Ash and Rekha -- are highly, shall we say, insecure.
But then, you gotta hand it to Madame Re. Cleverly preempting any talk, she has praised
La Dixit to the skies.
We choose to ignore the fact that Madhuri's denials about quitting films and her
statements like, "I am available for good meaningful roles" are fuel to rumours
of her marriage already on the rocks. So what if Madhuri is spending more time in India
than with her husband? However, producer KC Bokadia paints a different picture.
Apparently, he had planned out the shooting schedule of his film in the US, since Shah
Rukh Khan had agreed to shoot the songs when he was touring the country.
But when Shah Rukh changed the venue and decided to call the unit to Vancouver, Madhuri
put her foot down and refused.
Why? Because she wanted to shoot in LA, which was closer home. And staying away from
home was not ageeable with her.
Now, who said her marriage was on the rocks?
Screen Goddess or Vamp?
Is Madhuri Dixit playing a double role in real life? It seems like it. Judging from the
different views that different people have of her, it almost seems as if there are two
Madhuris. And we're not talking about Madhuri Dixit versus Madhuri Nene. Marriage may have
changed her surname, but it doesn't seem to have changed her attitude. No, the problem
goes deeper than that. The question really should be: Is Madhuri genuinely the screen
goddess that she appears to be? Or is she a real-life vamp?
The most recent controversy that exploded in her face is the Saroj Khan-Gaja Gamini
issue. Apparently, India's most famous dance director is maha-mad with Madhuri. That's a
pity because until recently, Saroj Khan was maha-mad about Madhuri! In fact, Saroj Khan is
one of the key pillars in the towering edifice of Madhuri's career. Remember the old but
gold Ek do teen dance number from Tezaab? Of course you do. If it wasn't for that song,
you wouldn't remember Madhuri today!
Until Tezaab and Saroj Khan's controversial choreography for that now-legendary song,
Madhuri was just another pretty face among dozens of prettier faces. Remember the film
Aabodh? Or Uttar Dakshin? Or any one of the half a dozen other forgettable flops? Why
should you. They didn't make any impression on the box - office or the fans and neither
did Madhuri at that time.
It took a director like N. Chandra, a star like Anil Kapoor, a song like Ek do teen and
most of all, a dance ustaad like Saroj Khan to bring out the star-quality in Madhuri.
Whatever her acting abilities, it was the way she moved on the dance floor that first
gained her fame. The swaying of her ample hips drove fans crazy and had the cash registers
ringing around the clock with repeat viewings. There's no question that she began counting
her blessings with Ek do teen.
For years after Tezaab, Madhuri and Saroj Khan seemed inseparable. Their destinies
intertwined, they rose together on a single, luminous cloud to greater heights of success
year after year. On the sets, their camaraderie was considered rare and precious. You
can't begin to count the number of interviews in which each praised the other. Or the
number of times that veteran Saroj Khan recommended the upcoming young actress to every
producer in sight, and vice versa. put all that seems to have changed. For the worse.
According to word in tinseltown, Saroj is fuming over the fact that she hasn't been
credited for her choreography in Madhuri's long-awaited Gaja Gamini. If you recall, that's
the arty film 'created' by maha-fida artist Hussain as a screen expression to his
Madhuri-obsession. While the film isn't expected to have a strong commercial future, it's
certainly an event that the media and filmlovers have been curious to see.
After all, once a star gains commercial success, the hunger for critical acclaim starts
to show itself. Taking a cue from 'crossover' actresses like Tabu, Raveena and the
suddenly experimental Karisma, Madhuri probably hoped that Gaja Gamini would raise her
image as an actress of substance.
But first there were rumours that the film's release had been delayed indefinitely by
Madhuri herself. Why would she do that, you ask? Well, if the rumours are to be believed,
it's because she suddenly met with a string of flops, ending with the bitterly
disappointing fate of Pukar, a film she had poured her heart and soul into without any
results. She needed a hit badly, and releasing a Gaja Gamini now might have been the worst
thing for her career. So, according to sources close to her, she used stalling tactics to
delay the launch, upsetting her 'No. 1 fan' Hussain in the process.
But it still doesn't explain the Saroj Khan snub. What possible reason could there be
for the danseuse not getting credit for her work in the film? One camp claims that
Madhuri's secretary-turned-producer Rikku (Rakeshnath) is to blame. But as anyone who
knows Madhuri, knows very well that Rikku wouldn't even breathe without Madhuri's
permission. And even if someone else was responsible for dropping Saroj's name from the
film credits, Madhuri certainly has the clout to get it included again. So why won't she
do that much at least for an old, dear friend, and a mentor who was directly responsible
for her early success? Your guess is as good as our's.
But that's only the tip of the iceberg. Like the giant glacier on which she danced in
sub-zero temperatures for that glorious song sequence in Pukar, Madhuri herself seems to
have turned her warmth down to near freezing levels of late. Saroj Khan is only one of the
many Madhuri "campwallahs" who are upset with her today.
Ake Anil Kapoor, for instance. As her co-star in Tezaab, his fortunes were twined with
her's just as closely as Saroj Khan's. In fact, he's said to have recommended her so often
and so passionately to producers, that they began to wonder if they were actually siblings
separated at birth! Their hits together could have formed a filmography that would match
any modern superstar screen couple. The magic showed clearly in Ram Lakhan, where even
director Subhash Ghai, notorious for being stingy with his compliments, openly praised
their jodi and predicted a great future for them as a screen pair.
But today, you'll rarely even hear Anil Kapoor mention Madhuri's name, let alone
recommend her. Not that he needs to, of course. But even at her wedding, he only put in a
brief appearance and left almost immediately. That was definitely not what you'd expect
from an old and dear friend and professional associate.
Again, the sources close to Madhuri claim that Anil was upset at the way she shut him
out in the last few years. After the phenomenal success of Dil To Pagal Hai, her attitude
to her longtime co-star is said to have changed drastically. And when the time came for
her wedding, he was kept as much in the dark as anyone else. Not exactly the way an old
friend would expect to be treated!
Perhaps Madhuri was secretly resentful of the fact that Anil had never taken her in one
of his home productions, despite their warm professional relationship? She was said to
have seethed silently as Sridevi scored big-time in brother Boney's big hits like Mr India
and even bigger attempts like Roop Ki Raani Choron Ka Raja. Anil could hardly do anything
about that.
Afer all, brother Boney's fascination for Sridevi was no secret even before he finally
divorced his wife and married the dusky Southern beauty. But if the sources are correct,
Madhuri was irate enough about her exclusion from the Surindar Kapoor-Boney Kapoor
production camp to steadily distance herself from brother Anil. A petty form of behaviour
and unfair to an old and loyal associate.
When there's the Sanjay Dutt story. A typical filmi love story, complete with tragic
ending. Picture two young passionate co-stars. Brought together in a film that became an
overnight romantic classic: Saajan. The romance that began onscreen in that tear jerking
heartbreaker continued off screen through a series of liaisons that were said to be
heading for only one possible goal - marriage. Sanjay himself made no secret of the fact
that he was mad about Madhuri and she didn't deny it hotly either.
At the shooting of their film, Mahaanta, in a Dadar chawl, the two couldn't wait to
'get together' in Madhuri's vanity van for a spot of intimacy!
By the time they starred in Khalnayak, the two were said to be inseparable. Comparisons
were being made to Raj Kapoor and Nargis, Dharam and Hema. Sadly, the relationship was
doomed to suffer the fate of that first screen couple, not the second. When Sanjay Dutt
was arrested under TADA and imprisoned, Madhuri was said to be shaken to the core. Like
any image-conscious superstar, she was ultra-anxious about bad publicity. And Sanjay was
getting the worst kind of publicity imaginable. At the time, it seemed hopeless for him.
People were predicting that he would either commit suicide in jail or his career would
commit suicide out of jail.
Madhuri's overnight severing of all bonds with Sanjay might seem practical, even
inevitable as a co-star. But as a lover and all-but-fiancee, it was a betrayal of the
worst kind. Sanjay, still reeling from the tragedy of his first doomed marriage and
staggered by the crushing punitive action taken against him for relatively minor
infractions, was said to be broken by her betrayal. Some say he still hasn't got over it.
After the breakup with Sanjay-or betrayal, whichever you prefer-Madhuri seemed to
become even more remote and distant than before. Always known for her legendary
"ice-queen" aloofness, she began to change in ways that any student of
superstardom would recognize. Mumbai MLC Pramod Navalkar was heard complaining loudly that
he had tried repeatedly to get her to attend a major charity function. He wouldn't have
minded if she had refused on account of a busy schedule, but he's said to have resented
the fact that she wouldn't even return his calls!
Sanjay Leela Bhansali, now riding high in filmdom after the phenomenal success of Hum
Dil De Chuke Sanam, had his own story of woe. Apparently, back in the pre-Khamoshi days
when he was still an unknown entity, just one of a thousand other wannabes, he had tried
repeatedly to meet Madhuri and narrate the script of Khamoshi to her. According to a
source close to Bhansali, he was repeatedly kept waiting by Madhuri, until finally she's
said to have slammed the door of her make-up room in his face. No wonder he tried his luck
elsewhere and fared much better with Manisha Koirala, who turned in a brilliant
performance-even though the role was actually written with Madhuri in mind.
Now,the same Madhuri has signed on to star in Devdas, directed by the same Sanjay Leela
Bhansali. What made her accessible? Obviously, Bhansali's success. The young director is
said to be philosophical about her change-of-heart. He claimed to have dreamed of working
with her from way back. But even now, his path to filming with her seems to be fraught
with problems: Word is that Madhuri might be pregnant. Which means that if it's true,
Devdas will just have to wait. Along with all her other commitments and producers.
This last alleged occurrence is a perfect example of Madhuri's other side. As with her
marriage, her rumoured pregnancy came as a sudden shock to her co-stars and producers.
While nobody can deny her right to have a family, the least the industry expected was a
little fair warning. After all, it's films that gave her the wealth and fame that allows
her to enjoy her life, including being a contented mother.
Surely she could treat the same industry with a little more respect and consideration?
If not by planning her marriage and pregnancy with more foresight, but at least by
informing her colleagues of her plans? But according to some, she told nobody about these
sudden, life-changing decisions until they were fait accompli, costing producers millions
of rupees in lost time and creating havoc with the schedules of co-stars.
Even Subhash Ghai, the mentor who did as much for her career as Saroj Khan and Anil
Kapoor, openly revealed his cooling off towards Madhuri in her later, prima donna phase.
After raising her star-value immeasurably with superhits like Ram Lakhan and Khalnayak, he
might have expected more from her.
But, like so many others, he made the mistake of believing that she was truly the
screen goddess of her media image. Whereas she actually seemed to have more in common with
a screen vamp.
Khalid graduates to Madhuri from Karishma
25th Oct 2000 13.16 IST
By Tanuka Chakraverty
Fiza may not have done what Khalid
expected it to do. But the film surely got noticed and Khalid Mohamed became a household
name.
This yet-to-be-titled venture is going to be a serious film with two stars playing the two
main roles. Sources say that talks are on between Khalid and Madhuri Dixit for the actress
to give a nod to the film.
The other star of the film has to be finalized. Whether it is going to be Hrithik or not
is a smart guess. We remember Hrithik saying at Fiza's press conference that he
would kill Khalid if he did not take Hrithik in his next film. Do you get a cue there?
These days the erstwhile Ms 'Dhak Dhak' has stopped accepting glamour roles. She is more
into substantial roles that offer scope for histrionics. Khalid's offer may just be the
right kind of opportunity for Mads too, as it would be for our Khalid saab.
Hussain's 'Indian woman' gets an American twang
So, Mrs Nene is done with picking up all the tricks as
a good actress and an even better dancer. So, what's left to learn? Plenty, if you are a
good 'student'. No, no Madhuri Dixit is not picking up tricks in producing films or
wielding the megaphone, as many 'senior' stars are wont to do. Rather, these days apna
dhak dhak queen is polishing up her persona to fit a very different scene patidev
Sriram Nene's home in LA.
From what we heard, Madhuri is picking up the right accent to fit into LA society,
matching the firangs gab for gab. A faint American twang, swears anyone who's
spoken to her of late. So, for starts, Mads is rolling her 'R's and imbibing that faintly
nasal tone that is heard abundantly in Uncle Sam's land.
All very fine for Mr and Mrs Nene. But we wonder if that bit of acquired accent is
giving sleepless nights to director Sanjay Bhansali, who's hellbent on casting Madhuri as
Chandramukhi in his forthcoming Devdas. After all, novelist Sarat Chandra
Chattopadhaya (for the uninitiated, he wrote the original novel in Bangla) would be
turning in his grave if Chandramukhi indeed turns hip!
And whatever about good ol' M F Hussain?! Isn't Madhuri's biggest fan sure to get
hiccups over this Americanization of his 'all-Indian woman'?
Madhuri: still the first choice!
Komal Nahta (10/12/00)
Turns out that the makers of Sawaal Dus Crore Ka turned to Anupam Kher as host
of Zee TV's answer to Kaun Banega Crorepati, after cutting no dice with Madhuri
Dixit.
There was even talk of actor Paresh Rawal being approached to host the show. But the
honours, for now, go to actor Anupam Kher.
Rikku, Madhuri's secretary, explains why the actress will not pose a threat -- for now
-- to the big B: "Dates were a problem. She simply wasn't available. Besides, at the
moment, she is determined to spend her fast-approaching first wedding anniversary with Dr
Shriram Nene. For the moment, she is no hurry to face the camera."
The point, though, if reliable sources are to be believed, is that Madhuri is Zee's
first choice and there is no move being made to replace her. Though Anupam Kher has been
finalised for the first three months as host of SDCK, in all likelihood,
negotiations are still on to get Madhuri to dazzle contestants.
Madhuri's dream role
10/06/00
Actress Madhuri Dixit says her 'great role' is yet to come and that she is still
searching for it.
"It is still to come. I'm looking for it. Searching for the right role, something
exciting," she said in an interview in Face To Face on BBC recently. This
was in response to the question whether she had got her one great role which, at the end
of the day, great actresses are identified with (like Rekha in Umrao Jaan and
Nargis in Mother India.)
To whether it would be a particular director, script or something tangible within her,
she replied it would be a combination of all three, adding, "I don't think Rekha,
when she did Umrao Jaan, or Nargis when she did Mother India were aware
that those films would be landmarks in their career."
Madhuri, who shot to fame in the early 1980s and went on to become the heart-throb of
millions, said she still felt like a juvenile when facing the camera and still got
butterflies in her stomach.
"I still feel passionately about my work. It is the perfectionist in me," she
said.
The character closest to her, she revealed, is Nisha in Hum Aapke Hain Koun?
"I was brought up with traditional values in a joint family."
Madhuri admitted to being suspicious initially about her first hit number, Ek do
teen: "I thought, 'What kind of a song is this? It's just counting.' But it was
great fun when I did it!"
PTI
Madhuri to host Sawaal Dus Crore Ka
Oct 5, 2000
After the tiff on Madame Tussads between Madhuri and Amitabh, now its time for the
tiff on TV!
It took one game show, Kaun Banega Crorepati, and one charismatic host,
Amitabh Bachchan, to turn Star's fortune. KBC, which started on July 3, is a
runaway success. With a TRP of 17, it's got the highest ever rating for any programme on
national cable television.
Star, in the meanwhile, refuses to rest on its laurels. They plan to keep the
excitement levels high by introducing celebrity KBC shows at regular intervals.
The channel has managed to rope in Bollywood actors Sonali Bendre and Aamir Khan for the
time being. And talks are on with superstar Shah Rukh Khan and director Karan Johar.
Yet, there is a coincidence. Star TV's innovations coincide with Zee launching Sawaal
Dus Crore Ka -- its answer to KBC. Though the show is rumoured to be hosted
by Madhuri Dixit, Star doesn't see it as a threat. Or so they say.
"They are the ones who have to live up to the standards of KBC. An
attractive host is not enough to carry the episode. The format is very critical. It's all
about prime time real life drama," asserts a confident Nair.
Star, at this stage is not willing to disclose details about future innovations on the
show. But he does let slip the news that host Amitabh Bachchan has extended his contract
for another 130 episodes.
Madhuri to appear in BBC's Face to Face series on entertainment industry
Oct 4, 2000
New Delhi: Close on the heels of talks about Zee tying up with Madhuri Dixit for
`Sawal Dus Crore Ka', BBC World has announced that it would be having Mads on its `Face to
Face' programme today (Wednesday - October 4), not as the host but as a guest. To be
sponsored by Maruti Suzuki Baleno, BBC World is starting a series on personalities in the
entertainment and glamour industry in `Face to Face'. The 13-episode series on the
entertainment industry will begin today (October 4), the first guest being Bollywood queen
Madhuri Dixit. According to a BBC spokesperson, many prominent stars will feature in this
programme, but not all names have been finalised yet. Recordings are still on, said the
spokesperson.
Among the people who are certain to feature in this entertainment series are Shamik
Davar, Meera Nair and Ritu Kumar. The programme is telecast every Wednesday at 10 p.m. and
repeated on Thursday at 12 noon and 6 p.m., on Sunday at 1 p.m. and on Monday at 6 p.m.
The entertainment industry series is the second trend series in `Face to Face'. Earlier,
it ran a series on cricketing heroes which featured Pataudi, Ravi Shastri, Bishen Singh
Bedi, Ajit Agarkar, Robin Singh and others. The cricketing series was sponsored by Philips
India. Encouraged by the response to the cricketing series, BBC World decided to run a
similar one on the entertainment industry.
While `Face to Face' started in July 1999 as a general personality-based interview
programme, the first trend series - Indian Cricketing Heroes - began a year later in July
2000. And now, it's the turn of the second trend series - Indian Entertainment Industry.
Face To Face is presented by Karan Thapar and produced in Delhi for BBC World by UTV. It
is a part of BBC World's dedicated India-specific programming slot telecast at 10 p.m.
everyday.

Is Madhuri pregnant?
By Mohan Deep 9/25/00
Yes
Or no.
First were the stories that Madhuri is pregnant and they could be easily believed. After
all the lady was married and every woman wishes to be a mother. Time wasn't on
her side. She was never going to be a young mother like Dimple Kapadia and she had
no reason to delay her motherhood. Her work in films couldn't be the reason. Gaja
Gamini was already completed. Lajja was on the floor but as the
plans were, it has almost been wrapped up. Besides being one of the many heroines in the
film, Madhuri knew that this was not an `action` film. Cases of pregnant heroines laughing
through the films are many though the two we remember clearly are: Jaya Bachchan in
Sholay and Hema Malini in Kranti. Abhishek was a glint
in the eyes of Jaya and Esha along with Hema Malini rolled all over the upper deck
of a ship under a heavy downpour in Kranti.
The only other film that Madhuri has is Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Aaj Ka Devdas.
The role that she is doing is being eyed by Manisha Koirala for a long time. This
couldn't be first such instance if a director drops Madhuri in favour of Manisha, either. Vidhu
Vinod Chopra had first signed Madhuri for Love Story 1942 but unhappy
with Madhuri's `casual` attitude ("What more can I do besides doing photo-session for
him before he starts the film? After all this is not the first film I am doing." She
had retorted when Chopra had lambasted her for her lack of interest in his project.) he
had replaced her with Manisha Koirala.
Grapevine has it that Manisha has been sending feelers to Bhansali after reading about the
news of Madhuri's pregnancy.
"This is a role I would give anything to get." Manisha is said to have uttered.
Her plans faced a puncture on the way as Madhuri's secretary Rikku rubbished the
stories about his boss' pregnancy. "Madhuri is not pregnant. These stories are mere
speculations."
Madhuri herself is on record as saying, "I am not expecting and like I did with my
marriage I will announce my pregnancy to the world." Dixit girl has never kept her
producers in dark and knows the amount of money that rides on a film. She is a
professional and very responsible star who wishes to continue doing select films.
Madhuri is NOT going to be a mother during the making of Devdas.
"Only one girl in millions gets a chance to reach where I have reached on the ladder
of stardom. One has to sacrifice something for all this. I have no regrets." Madhuri
had told me talking about the delay in her marriage. Her response is same.
In fact, Rikku tells us that when she plans her baby, Madhuri will take an official break. |
Madhuri Dixit's 'no' dents Upendra's ego
Upendra, the superstar of the Kannada film industry is upset with Madhuri Dixit these
days.
The buzz around the Kannada industry is that Madhuri Dixit was
offered a role in a Kannada blockbuster Kaveri opposite Upendra. The Bollywood
superstar, however, turned down the offer. And her rejection has offended the superstar.
Madhuri's version over the whole episode is something else.
"This is news to me!" she exclaimed. "As a matter of fact, no one
approached me with an offer for a Kannada film. So far, I have said yes to only one South
Indian offer, Engineer, opposite Arvind Swamy, which has landed in the cold
storage," the lady clarified.
However, the producer of Kaveri Dhanaj is also let down
over Madhuri's 'rejection'. The last we heard, he is now hunting for a new face for Kaveri.
Madhuri Dixit - Nene: 'Not Pregnant'
Her Secretary Rikku Says
So!
Filmfare, Sep 22, 2000
Banish the thought guys and gals. The rumor is just a rumor. Madhuri Dixit - Nene is
not pregnant - as reported in certain sections of the media. In fact, when we spoke to her
secretary-turmed-producer Rikku to check out the rumors, he vent a lot of steam at the
'gossipmonger' presswallas. "What nonsense! Madhuri is not pregnant. She will tell
the world if any such good news happens. But right now she is not in the family way. In
fact she is very much doing her film work. She is in the US and will return in November.
You can ask her yourself and even see for yourself!" Yes. Of course. In the meantime,
she still looks as gorgeous as ever, stork or no stork. Unless Rikku's anger frightened
away the poor bird too.
Madhuri shatters admirer's dream again!
Sep 09, 2000
Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali's long-cherished dream, it seems, has once been
shattered. And this time it maybe for good.
Ever since Bhansali launched his career as an independent director, he has been dying
to work with Madhuri Dixit. First, he couldn't get the actress to say yes for his debut
directorial venture, Khamoshi-The Musical. And though Manisha Koirala
stepped in to do a great job, after the film was rejected by his next choice Kajol,
Bhansali still maintains one of his greatest regrets in life is Madhuri not working in Khamoshi.
And when Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam happened, Bhansali made the rounds of Dixitville
once again. It was a literal action replay of events rejected by Madhuri and then
rejected by Kajol, the role was scooped up to glory by Aishwarya Rai this time.
Post Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, of course, Bhansali's stakes are at an all-time
high. So, no surprises that Madhuri did not think twice before giving the nod to
Bhansali's new film, Devdas. The film was announced with fanfare and why
not, when you have Shah Rukh Khan playing Devdas, Madhuri Dixit playing Chandramukhi and
Aishwarya Rai playing Paro (interestingly, the director had approached Kajol for this
role, and the lady refused Bhansali for the third straight time!).
But to get back to Madhuri and Bhansali's dream, just when you thought the dream would
turn real, some blabbering gab leaked a rumour around that our dear Mrs Nene will be
expecting the stork's visit in a few months' time!
While Madhuri has not yet officially confirmed reports of her pregnancy, a shattered
Bhansali, we heard, is holding talks on the sly with Sushmita Sen for the Chandramukhi
role just in case the li'l gossip about Mads turning mom is true.
Que sera sera, Bhansali, what will be, will be. You simply can't change the
course of fate, can you? Not even with the power of your most fervent dream.
After Gajagamini, Madhuri tries to find a place in Hollywood
Berlin, Sept. 10:
Top film actress Madhuri Dixit, settled in the United States after marriage, says she
has
no plans to quit acting in films, and would consider a debut in Hollywood films if offered
suitable roles.
Though I live in America, you will see more of me in films. I love acting and I am not
not
going to give up (acting) so easily, Madhuri Dixit said here on Saturday
night.
Looking resplendant in a multi-coloured silk sari worn in typical Marathi style,
glamorous
Madhuri made these comments when asked about her future plans after the world premiere of
eminent painter Maqbool Fida Hussians Hindi film Gajagamini. Hussain, who has
conceived, written and directed the film, told the packed audience at the arsenal theatre
located in the ultra modern sony centre complex that the film was planned to be released
in India in November.
Madhuri plays the lead role in the 130-minute film essaying different forms of
women
spanning several centuries. Sharukh Khan, Naseerudian Shah and Shabana Azmi are also in
the starcast in what film critics here said was out and out a Madhuri film.
Asked whether she would take up Hollywood films, Madhuri said if I get offers for roles
to
my liking, I would consider making a Hollywood debut. But, she was quick to
point out,
I am not following a strategised approach to work in Hollywood films.
To a question whether she likes India or US, her new home, Madhuri diplomatically
replied
that India is where I grew up and got fame, but my Husband is in the US and I love
my
husband. About acting in Hussians directorial venture, she said it was a
great
experience, different from acting in mainstream Bollywood films.
To act in Hussains film was a learning process for me and Gajagamini has
added another
beautiful movie to my repertoire of my films, Madhuri, who is on her first
visit to
Germany, remarked.Madhuri said she decided to act Gajagamini impressed more out of
its
content than the form.
The films a unique one and does not fall into any particular category like a
Bollywood
film or arty film or parallel cinema, she said. The Bearded Hussain said he
chose Berlin
for the world premiere of his directorial venture because of emotional reasons and
special
attachment to the german capital.
Hussain recalled that a short film made by him 30 years, ago was first shown in a
berlin
film festival where he got recognition as a film maker. He said the theatre
release of
his film will be synchronised with holding major painting exhibitions featuring his works.
Madhuri Dixit: 'Contract'ulations !
Just reminding you that Madhuri Dixit, now more rightly Madhuri Nene, has two things to
be congratulated about, one is of course for carrying a tote (or should I call the kid
coke, kyonki 'woh Madhuri ke coke se janm hone wala hai' a PJ I know, and the
latest thing she signed contract with the beauty FMCG company, 'Emami'. Well, what's
noteworthy out here is that this contract spans over a period of eleven years and what's
more
the products will be christened after the Queen Bee herself. It's going to be
called the "Madhuri Emami range" of products
here's to the fairer sex with
Madhuri leading the way.
Madhuri on way to Ma-hood
25th Aug 2000 12.50 IST
By Tanuka Chakraverty
Folks its official! It has been
finally announced that Madhuri Dixit Nene is on her way to be a mother.
After a lot of speculations, it was confirmed that Ms Nene will deliver in seven months
from now.
The actress had just returned from a long holiday from the US where her husband lives.
She had resumed shooting for films that she had signed and was in particular, looking
forward to the shooting of Devdas.
It was Madhuri's long time wish to be seen as 'Chandramukhi' on screen. Now with the
stork visiting her, it is doubtful whether she will be able to do a role that demands
plenty of dancing. But giving up a mere role in a film for motherhood is too small a
sacrifice. And we're sure Mads will agree with us on that.
The buzz this week is that the mesmerizing Madhuri Dixit is already two months
pregnant. The news has thrilled the Dixits and the Nenes (her husband's family), but has
left her producers shaken. Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who had earlier extracted a promise from
Madhuri that she would not get pregnant before his film 'Devdas' was completed, has
perhaps received the biggest shock.
Madhuri Dixit may be in the family way
Monday 21 August 2000
We have reason to believe that Madhuri Dixit Nene may be in the family way. What are
you saying? Abhi to shaadi hui thi, right? Hey, it's been nearly a year since she
tied the knot and it's about time, as most dadis and dadas would feel.
Madhuri, though has not been around to confirm or deny this news and her family too
appears to maintain a 'pregnant' silence on the issue. Oops, did we just say the wrong
thing? It's only a matter of time before we find out. Watch this space for details!
Yakkin' of beauties, we may add that Madhuri Dixit has become spokesperson for the
cosmetic conglomerate, Emami. Yehi hai right choice baby, we'd like to add. Meanwhile,
Mads has been house-hunting in America with hubby. One house they rather liked belonged to
singer Yesudas. Dunno what came of the negotiations but Maddy's finally gettin' rather
serious about settling down in Yum-rica. Boo hoo.
What's Madhuri Dixit upto these days?
21st Aug 2000 16.38 IST
By Tanuka Chakraverty
Heard that Mrs Nene is back in Mumbai
from a long vacation in the US, very much a busybody again.
She is concentrating on her film assignments and is in the finishing stages of
post-production work in Lajja.
Madhuri Dixit's trim and slim body indicates that the actress has been spending time on
herself also, apart from work.
The actress gets a trifled annoyed when we ask her about her hubby. ''All the time people
ask me about my husband'' she says with a smile though. ''Yes, I go there to spend time
with my husband, but I also do other things. Like I exercise with him a lot, since he's a
health freak. I play with my nephew and do many other things''. The actress was busy in
Florida hunting for a house, by the way.
Madhuri again gets annoyed with the craze for Net. And she herself is not a Net freak. ''I
like to be technology friendly but do not approve of the idea of compressing the world on
the Net'' says the actress. She hates the way kids remain glued to computers. ''It
snatches away their childhood and they learn things which they ought not learn at their
ages''.
Excited about her role in Sanjay Bhansali's Devdas, Madhuri says ''I hope I do
justice to it.'' Her fans already miss her and want her to be back on the screens. The
last that she was seen was in Boney Kapoor's Pukaar. Madhuri's next release is
going to be Lajja.
Madhuri: More Elephantine Problems!
24st Aug 2000 16.38 IST
You know already that M.F.Hussain's debut directorial venture starring his muse,
Madhuri Dixit has found no takers. There is absolutely no distributor in the largest
film-producing nation who would want to buy the film. So, Hussain saab will now be
releasing a book on the film. Huh? What was that you said? A book on a movie that was
never released? Yeah, well! You can't have it all, right? But, hey, the good news (for
those of you who miss Madhuri Dixit) is that it will be premiered on TV. Watch out for
that one!
Madhuri Dixit: Beauty And The 'Best'!
It
had to be Madhuri Dixit. When it comes to endorsing beauty products the gorgeous lady
takes the cake. And considering that the product is from the Emami stables, it simply
sealed the Dixit factor into the deal. If you remember Madhuri was among the select list
of celebs who had been invited by the Calcutta based Emami family for the grand wedding of
their daughter this January. So there could be no other choice for the brand line which,
incidentally, will be called 'The Emami-Madhuri Line'. It's a triumph for the beautiful
lady alright, especially against all those who cruelly wrote her off after her marriage to
Dr. Nene of LA. It just proves that this beauty is the 'best'!
... Pukar goes silver ...
Surinder Kapoor and Boney Kapoor celebrated the silver
jubilee of their Anil Kapoor, Madhuri Dixit and Namrata Shirodkar starrer, Pukar on July
21. The film, directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, has music by AR Rahman.
Mrs. Nene may act in a Kannada film
27th July 2000 15.05 IST
Bollywood heartthrob Madhuri Dixit is
likely to act in a Kannada film titled Cauvery.
Producer of the film Dhanraj has sent the script to the much sought after actress and is
awaiting a positive response from her.
Based on the Cauvery riot that took place in 1993 in Karnataka, the film also casts
Upendra and acclaimed Tamil actor Prabhu Deva.
The project if it materializes may likely cause another problem as the subject is related
to Cauvery riots on the sharing of Cauvery river water between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
And one has to wait and watch how the Tamil film Industry will react on the presence of
Prabhu Deva in a Kannada film.
Will Mads redefine DD as dhak dhak zone?
13th July 2000

It could be a blitzkrieg. It could be a pleasant
surprise. Depends upon the way you look at it. But the buzz is strong on the Bolly vine
that Madhuri Dixit has just given the nod for a starring role in a forthcoming TV serial.
To set the record straight, our mole on the grapevine informs us
that Mads of the million hearts has expressed her willingness to do a serial called Swar
Sadhana, due to hit Doordarshan in the near future. And that too, not a one-episode
guest appearance but as the serial's full-fledged heroine, in the role of a classical
singer. While sexy Dixie has herself been tight-lipped over the topic, she has actually
not gone ahead and denied the rumour on record. So, assuming there is no smoke without
fire, all this talk about Madhuri's foray into the small screen could be a reality, after
all.
By the way, one naughty tongue couldn't help thinking aloud over
one tiny issue: given that no Madhuri starrer is complete without that scorching dhak
dhak number, will the classical singer in the serial also gyrate to a classical song
or two in every episode?!
Of bills and cooing
19th June 2000
Those who prophesied that Madhuri Dixit would maintain a marriage
at long distance are wondering if they ought to go back for a refresher at the astrology
school.
They've just learnt that after she came in for a long shooting schedule of Deepak
Shivdasani's Yeh Raaste Hain Pyar Ke, her telephone bill has shot so high
that, once paid, it will keep MTNL in the black for years to come.
And the big bill is all courtesy one ISD call she made, no prizes for guessing to whom.
Chastened, Ms Dixit has got a computer installed at home and has downloaded ICQ so that
she can keep in touch.
But then, all of this happens only when she is in Bollywood shooting for her incomplete
ventures, and the one solo venture she has signed up. Otherwise, she prefers to be
ensconced in the comforts of her home in the US of A. In the company of one Dr Nene.
How to forget an elephant
19th June 2000
If we discuss Madhuri, can we forget M F Husain -- even if Ms
Dixit has? The lady's apparently giving him the cold shoulder ever since she tied the
knot. We hear she has even lost interest in Gajagamini, the film she was
co-producing and which marked Husain's debut as a mainstream director.
The film, an artistic effort, wasn't to have a commercial release, but was to circulate
only in film festivals. But it hasn't been entered in any such event.
Is it because Madhuri herself is so embarrassed by the product that she prefers to see
it mercifully sink away into oblivion? Since we haven't seen it either, we can't tell.
Madhuri's wonder years
19th June 2000 As told to Lata Khubchadani
She won the hearts of millions as soon as she sang, ek, do, teen and from then on
Madhuri Dixit has been one of the most loved actresses to hit Indian cinema halls. Her
passion for song and dance came at a very early age, she tells us all about it
"As a teenager I was a fairly good student. But more involved in extracurricular
activities, like, dancing and singing. The one thing I have always been very astute about
are my aims and goals in life. I never succumbed to peer pressure, I never followed the
trends which were the in thing. I guess you could say, that I was not the average confused
teenager. I loved acting in plays, but dancing was my passion. I was always this dreamy,
head in the clouds teenager. I remember sitting up in my room and imagining myself
performing on stage."
"But like all teens, I also did silly things for the heck of it. I once, went and
got myself this fabulous unruly haircut because I wanted to be a pop singer. I attended
lectures at Parle college, which was this really Maharashtrian college. I remember belting
out this great English number on the college day, it was really dreamy. I dreamt a lot and
I did a lot too. Life has been very kind to me. Things which were unfair always made me
unhappy, but that didn't stop me from playing the occasional prank. The funny part was
that, my teachers never could believe that I'd be the one playing mischief, even if I
owned up."
"One such incident sticks out clearly in my mind. A group of us got into this
giggling fit and the teacher asked us to stand up. I stood up too, sheepishly, because I'd
been laughing too but she said `not you' you sit down! This made my friends mad and they
said `she'd been giggling too'. The teacher replied, `keep quiet don't tell me what she
was doing'. I got away with punishment, most of the time."
"My family meant a lot to me, I've always been protected by my brothers, sisters
and parents. They pampered me to some extent but not to an extent where I was
spoilt."
The 85-year-young M F Hussain
16th June 2000 17.16 IST By Tanuka Chakraverty
Fit and energetic, the man seems to roller coast through life even when he
is nearing 90. Continues to ride an all-time high, including on his latest obsession,
Madhuri Dixit, a severe butt of jokes, laughter and criticism from almost all quarters.
Yesterday, that is, on June 15, 2000, Maqbool Fida Hussain turned 85. A frail soul
surviving on brushes, color and passions, the zeal with which Hussain leads life is
laudable.
Flak from critiques, refusals from distributors, glum response from film trade pundits
and magazines, have not been able to stop the incurable dreamer. People who have watched
his tribute to the Bollywood queen vouch for his devotion to the actress.
Reportedly, every reel of the film has been used to pan Madhuri's face, her smile, her
eyes, her body and her grace through dance movements. In short, 'Gajagamini' is a canvas
in motion with Madhuri as the subject.
M F Hussain held his first exhibition in the US in 1963. With a friend in politician,
ex-union minister and current CWC member Natwar Singh, Hussain just landed in New York in
Singh's apartment without any preparation. When Singh asked with bewilderment about the
art that he was going to exhibit Hussain answered: ''I will paint them".
Hussain painted 30 pieces in 10 days and as he was not a famous name then, his exhibition
was held at India House, 3 East 64 Street between 5th and Madison Avenues.
Sometime in the late 60s, Hussain wanted to paint a portrait of Indira Gandhi. Again
with some help from friend Natwar Singh -- Singh was in Indira Gandhi's secretariat then
-- he worked on Mrs Gandhi, sitting with her in her South Block office. Hussain was
elected to the Rajya Sabha in 1986. Lost in thoughts and impulsive that he is, the artiste
unmindfully went into the Lok Sabha and occupied a seat there. Later of course he was told
of the mistake he had committed. Logical reasoning does not convince the
extraordinary painter. And that's where Hussain derives his brand. Zaniness, of which he
is proud, peculiarities like painting on rhythm, on dance, on-the-spot, on stage,
barefoot, anywhere.
Walking around with Kolhapuris and jeans, running up to daises, openly flaunting his
infatuation for Madame Dixit at 80 something, the man has not cared for anything.
What is really worth mentioning about the individual Hussain is his pledge for
secularism. The artiste continues to work unaffected by the divides that make or break the
humdrum world.
Maddening Mads
June 14, 2000
Mads
is living up to her nickname now by maddening all the producers who want to sign up the
newly wed Mrs Nene. She has laid down the condition that any producer who wants to sign
her up should also pay for her air-tickets, to and from the US to tinsel town. That, along
with the huge market price she commands. All this is enough to make any producer's budget
go completely out of hand. And though Pukaar failed to make a big impression and convince
all distributors that Madhuri is as hot as ever, her current box-office standing is still
very sound, and there is little the producerwallahs can do than pay up - through their
noses or otherwise.
Big B leads the race for being waxed at Tussauds
London, June 12 (Vijay Dutt)
Superstar Amitabh Bachchan looks set to beat his much younger Bollywood rivals yet again.
He is leading comfortably over film stars Shah Rukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit
and Aiswariya Rai in the votes being taken for nominating an Indian star for being made in
wax by the legendary Madame Tussauds wax museum on Marleybone Road, London.
The Tussauds website has so far received 2539 votes for Bachchan, with Shah Rukh
trailing at 1103, Madhuri Dixit at 837 and Aiswariya Rai close at her
heels with 780 votes.
It is also interesting to note that Bollywood legend, the late Raj Kapoor, has got as
much as 405 votes.
The final count will be known by June 20, when the voting officially closes. The name
of the chosen one will be announced on June 24 at the first International Indian Films
Awards at the Millennium Dome.
Over two million people visit the world famous museum every year. It has life-sized
realistic wax statues of famous personalities, past and present.
These include members of the Royal family in Britain, presidents, prime ministers, film
and theatre personalities, sportsmen and intellectuals throughout the world.
Indians selected for the museum in the past include father of the nation Mahatma
Gandhi, former prime ministers Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and P.V. Narasimha Rao.
Benazir Bhutto had also been honoured by the worlds best wax museum.
The Bollywood star chosen for the Tussauds will come to be known to the people in
every nook and corner of the world.

Madhuri: AIDS Awareness, The Glamorous Way!
12th June 2000
No one can teach
(and expect the public to listen) better than a glamorous film star. And who better than
Madhuri Dixit to bring the lesson home in style, to an awestruck audience? The message
will be understood, loud and clear, as MD has decided to educate the public on the evils
of AIDS and how to go about taking care. She is featuring in a series of one-minute tele
spots made by Dr Jabbar Patel (the award winning filmmaker) for the Maharashtra State AIDS
Control Society. The spots will be shown on the Indian television channel, Doordarshan,
and some other channels too in a month long campaign beginning on the 08th of June. And
believe us dearies, if this doesn't make the masses sit up and listen, nothing ever will.
PS: As for MD, well, a just cause is a good cause. What next? Cleaning up the studios,
like she always wanted? Probably.
Madhuri: Just Chit Chat!
12th June 2000
Either Madhuri's telephone bills have gone haywire or she has just become techno-savvy
of late. Now she and husband Sriram stay glued to their computers (she in Mumbai, he in
LA) whenever MD is in India for work. Reason? They chat or hours on the new ICQ chat
program. And with the latest in software, Mrs. Nene doesn't even have tot type. She simply
talks into a microphone. Want to know what the talk is? Na, na! That's what the Nene's
call a "hotline"!
The woman behind Madhuri's sex appeal
12th June 2000 By Sujata Garimella
AHMEDABAD: Kashmira Shah looks like an unlikely candidate to belong to the high
glamour world of films. Born and brought-up in Ahmedabad, this commerce graduate from H L
College gives the impression of being a regular wanna-stay-at-home lady. And so it comes
as surprise to know that she is partly responsible for Madhuri Dixit's immense sex appeal,
having been her designer right from Deewana mujhsa nahin!
"Designing has always interested me," she says. "I used to hold
exhibitions and deal with exclusive sarees, even way back in the early 1980s while I was
in Gujarat. Once Priya Tendulkar visited Ahmedabad, during her halcyon Rajni days. She
liked my stuff very much and asked me to go to Mumbai. There we finalised an art gallery
on Linking Road in Bandra and held my exhibition," she narrates.
From there on, she went from strength to strength, holding exhibitions regularly which
attracted the bourgeois for tinsel city. "I met my husband, Sailesh Shah at one of
the exhibitions and we clicked immediately. He too, is a designer and at that time he and
his sister Leena Daru were working together," she reminisces. After a whirlwind
romance, they got married and Kashmira joined the 'family business' which, spear-headed by
Daru, was designing for films.
Kashmira soon became important associate of Daru, an established and respected name
amongst the film circles. After six years of working with her sister-in-law, she branched
out on her own with Aaj ka Arjun, in which she did Jaya Prada's costumes. Her no-frills
deigns which stuck to the characterisation found favour with Madhuri Dixit and Deewana
Mujhsa Nahin landed in her lap. In an industry built on inter-personal relationships, she
struck the right note with La Dixit and became her regular designer for films like Saajan,
Sangeet, Yaarana, Dil Tera Aashiq, Khalnayak, Prem Granth, Dil To Pagal Hai, Pukar and
Gajagamini to name a few.
"Madhuri is rather lackadaisical about her clothes and accessories. She believes
in her acting, bas. But lately she has become more particular. One of the most difficult
films to design for was DTPH. Yash Chopra wanted Manish Malhotra, but Madhuri insisted on
me. So there was some hesitation on the producer's part. In his brief to me, Yashji said
that he doesn't want Silsila or Chandani, but he wants a similar feel and look. A number
of my designs were rejected. Finally, I made a simple pant-like salwar, offset with a
short choli and a see-through chiffon kameez thrown over it, asked Madhuri to wear it, and
took her to Yashji. He loved it," she relates. This entire exercise took her 15 days,
which is a long time by film standards where costumes are expected to be made overnight.
Her other regular client is Karisma Kapoor. "Karisma is so particular about her
clothes and even her accessories. She is very definite about what she wants. The great
thing about both these girls is that they make an effort to meet the tailors who work for
me and talk to them too," she enthuses.
The industry is also notorious for not paying the designers, "but that never
happened to me," states Kashmira. "I was doing the costumes of top heroines like
Madhuri and Karisma, and I always got the movies by their recommendation, so if there was
any problem, I'd simply tell the producer that I would duly tell the heroine what the
problem was, so I couldn't continue the film. This kind of straight dealing ensured that
there were no problems," she insists.
Amongst all her work, she takes the greatest pride in Prem Granth where she did the men
and group costumes in addition to Madhuri's clothes. "I was especially pleased when
there were a number of articles saying that the best thing about the film were the
cinematography and the costumes," she divulges.
Keeping a sane head on her shoulders, Kashmira places family first and refusing to get
swayed by the glamour of the girls, she works with, has chosen to opt out of the film
business. "My children are growing and they need me around. Films demand very long
working hours. I am now designing for people like Neeta Ambani. This is an easier pace of
work and brings in very good money too," she grins.
"Though trends are set by heroines wearing your costumes, I find this work very
challenging and creative. Right now if you see, all the girls look alike and their clothes
are mostly ready-to-wear stuff from malls abroad so I really don't see myself going back
to films," she asserts.
The dhak dhak girl as social crusader
05th June 2000 14.30 IST
More and more Bollywood actresses are nowadays donning up as social crusaders, thus taking
a short but a welcome break from the gaudy world of filmdom.
Manisha Koirala, we know, will be representing India at the UNFPA
forthcoming (June 25 to 26) seminar in Geneva, where she will present a paper on
population control. Another lesser-known actress, Suman Ranganathan works regularly for
the betterment of poverty stricken children. And now, the most talked-about actress,
Madhuri Dixit has taken a break from reel life and taken on a real life cause -- HIV/AIDS
awareness.
Maharashtra State AIDS Control society has produced 5 one-minute
tele-films (Ad spots as they better should be called) to bring about AIDS awareness,
particularly among Indian women. Madhuri appears in these spots with a social message that
highlights the measures for the prevention of the fatal disease. Directed by the noted
filmmaker Jabbar Patel, these films (originally made in Marathi language) have proved so
effective that the National Aids Control Organization decided to have them released in
Hindi too. Most probably these spots will be telecasted on Doordarshan and other satellite
channels I the coming days.
All the 5 spots have casual conversations between different members
of family with Madhuri entering the scene to give the universal message: "AIDS can
happen to anyone. Everyone can be saved from AIDS." One spot for instance has a young
wife warning her salesman husband from having extra-marital sex; in another, a mother
advises her son about his responsibility towards physical relationship with his
girlfriend.
One peculiarity of these spots is that they focus on the greater
role a woman could, and ought to play in creating the awareness for the prevention of
AIDS. Perhaps, that is why Madhuri was roped in to give the social message. Therefore,
parallel to the main message, another message follows that women should not hesitate while
talking about AIDS to the people they know -- their husband and other members of the
family.
Such awareness campaigns become very effective when well-known
actors and actresses, on whom the general population dotes, become a part of the message.
Of course, the advantageous position that such celebrities hold can and shall be more
often utilized for social causes. And by doing so, Madhuri has certainly moved beyond her
much-clichd image of a "dhak dhak" girl.
Well it seems that her marriage with Mr. Nene has instilled in her
the sensibilities that has made her look beyond the blinding arc lights of Bollywood.
On Mrs. Snehlata Dixit, Madhuri's momma
Simple, unassuming, Mrs Dixit, is a rare gem amongst star mothers.
There is nothing pretentious about her! In spite of all her daughter's success and fame,
she remains unchanged.
And Madhuri has always been exceedingly dependent on her mother. She
admits, "My mother is more of a friend. I can discuss just about anything with her.
Though she may appear conservative, she is a very modern woman." And a level headed
one at that, who never let Madhuri forget her middle-class origins to get carried away by
the industry glamour. She would still carry home-cooked meals, non-spicy, non-oily dishes
for Madhuri, since the unit food can get heavy sometimes. She would also tick her off if
she didn't agree with something. No special treatment for her girl just because she was a
star. The emphasis was always on being a good person instead. When Madhuri was home, she
was expected to help around the house like any other girl, especially with the cooking. No
wonder one has never heard of Madhuri throwing starry tantrums. But then graciousness is
not something you acquire; it is something you are born with. And the credit goes to the
wholesome Mrs. Dixit!
Madhuri Dixit: On A Mission!
While the whole
industry and its cousin is harping on how La Dixit could be quitting films after marriage
(even though the lady herself categorically claims that she has no intention of doing so),
Madhuri herself has put such rumours behind her. And she is now busy with a higher cause.
The actress is now lending her name to spread awareness about the killer disease AIDS.
Despite her busy schedule, what with her films and regular trips to the US to meet hubby
dearest, the dhak-dhak babe features in a series of one-minute telespots on preventing
AIDS that have been made by filmmaker Jabbar Patel for the Maharashtra State AIDS Control
Society. Must say, the denizens of Bollywood sure have their hearts in the right place,
folks. For the gorgeous Dimple Kapadia is also helping spread AIDS awareness along with
other causes she has espoused, like animal rights. Not to mention the Nepali beauty
Manisha Koirala who has taken up the cause of Nepali sex workers in Mumbai. Now that's
what we call women with a mission!
Madhuri Dixit: Still In The Reckoning!
30th May 2000
One lady who has
seen it all and still comes back for more is Madhuri Dixit. All those who said the
beautiful actress would quit films after marriage are eating their words. For her line up
of films is simply great. There's Husain's 'Gajagamini', Deepak Shivdasani's 'Yeh Raaste
Hain Pyar Ke', Bokadia's 'Hum Aapke Hain Sanam' and Bhansali's 'Devdas'. And the Dixit is
in no hurry now. She's taking all the time in the world to only pick and choose the roles
she wants to do. "I'm not signing too many films because I'm committed to a series of
shows and in between, whatever time I get, I'll be running home to Los Angeles." And
about her family life, she agrees that the way to a man's heart is through his stomach. So
she picking up kitchen strategies now. "I am, and believe me it's not at all
difficult," she assures. "I had never cooked earlier in my life, but the first
time I made his breakfast - scrambled eggs, I did a good job of it." Well, well.
Mads, we didn't expect anything less from you.
Amisha signs up Madhuri's secretary
30th May 2000
While Kaho Naa
Pyaar Hai has done a world of good and more for its hero Hrithik Roshan, the returns
have been not upto the mark for the film's other debutant star, Amisha Patel. At least
that's what the lady would like us to believe. Although the superhit status has brought in
some offers at the doorstep for the new pretty young thing about town, her ambitions are
clearly higher. And to take on the Esha Deol-Kareena Kapoor competition, Amisha is leaving
no stone unturned. For one, she's extra careful about the films she signs these days, to
avoid falling into a two-scene, five-song rut that so often plagues newcomers. And the
latest we heard about Amisha is that she's decided to sign up Rikku Rakeshnath as her
secretary. Recollect that Rikku has been, and still is, the secretary of Madhuri Dixit and
many in the industry feel Madhuri's rise to superstardom has a lot to do with the
professional way in which Rikku handled the lady's career. So, with Rikku holding the
reigns, Amisha's career is definitely in safe hands. Watch out for the dhamaka that
the lady is set to unleash from hereon.
Sanjay wants to give 'Devdas' authentic Bangla flavor
26th May 2000 13.50 IST
Yet another director is venturing to make the Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's classic into a
film after Kundan Lal Saigal and Dilip Kumar reaching to pinnacles of glory for their
roles in ''Devdas''.
After the success of ''Khamoshi'' and ''Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam'',
famed director Sanjay Leela Bhansali was in Calcutta recently to impart an authentic
Bengali flavor to the film featuring Shah Rukh Khan as the modern day lover, Aishwarya Rai
in the role of Parvati, and Madhuri Dixit as Chandramukhi, the prostitute.
Set against the backdrop of the new millennium, the story will be
given a contemporary twist.
''I'd rather not talk about 'Devdas' now. 'Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam'
happened very quietly and the final product was satisfying. At present, I would like to
concentrate on my research work. It would sound pompous if I talk about this film at every
stage of its making, explains the young director''.

Will it be Big B or Madhuri at Madame Tussaud?
22nd May 2000 19.25 IST By N K Deoshi
The
waxwork museum of Madame Tussaud in London and the British Tourism Authority have
shortlisted five Bollywood stars (Amitabh Bachchan, Raj Kapoor, Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya
Rai and Madhuri Dixit) to adorn the walls of the famous museum.
Every year Madame Tussaud adds 15 new statues to its collection.
These names were shortlisted after consultation with a panel of Indian movie-buffs,
trade pundits and leaders in the entertainment industry. Of the shortlisted names, only
one celluloid star will be immortalized in wax, and find a place among the 400 wax statues
of the eminent personalities. For the final selection the museum is relying on fans to
make their choice by voting online or by post.
There is great speculation about Big Bs making it to the top. Or it could be
Madhuri.
Once the final selection is done, the wax modelers will spend six months creating
a replica of the chosen star. And to help the modelers to come up with a perfect replica,
the chosen star will have to undergo extensive photo-shoots, and participate in sittings
for the sculptors.
The winner will be announced in June. Stars fans can stake a claim in the final
selection by making their choice at
http://www.madame-tussauds.com/site/london/f_bolly.htm
Tussauds shortlists five, Madhuri makes it after all!
An Indian celluloid star is soon to be immortalised in wax at
Londons Madame Tussauds museum, which has a collection of nearly 400 wax
statues of eminent personalities. The shortlist has five names -- Amitabh Bachchan, Raj
Kapoor, Aishwarya Rai, Shah Rukh Khan and surprise, surprise, Madhuri Dixit. Madhuri
wasnt on the list of six initially released to the press, as reported in SCREEN in
previous issues. The final choice will be made after an opinion poll. Now, this is bound
to perk up the spirits of the stars fans: those desirous of placing their votes are
welcome to do so at www.madame-tussauds.com. Who knows, getting your icon ready for
posterity, all in wax, of course, may be just a click of the mouse away. So, get cracking.
On a recent visit to Mumbai, Samantha Wade, an accounts manager for the
museum told The Indian Express the museum adds 15 new statues every year, and in the wake
of increasing requests from visitors to include Indian movie stars, it has decided to
devote one statue to a popular Bollywood actor this year.
Prem Subramanium of the British Tourist Authority (BTA) revealed the
decision on which stars statue would grace the museum would be taken by a team of
Madame Tussauds based on opinion polls and the forecast of the stars continued
popularity, and his/her universal appeal. On May 11, Madame Tussauds Diane Moon said
the five Indian stars had been shortlisted after consultations with a panel of Indian
movie buffs, trade pundits from film and entertainment magazines, community radio
stations, the BBC, and the industry.
The museum says it will take up to six months to create the first statue
of an Indian actor. Subramanium explains, "The star chosen has to agree to the same,
and must give time for an extensive shoot in India." He adds the star will also be
expected to participate in sittings for the statue-makers and will need to loan an
appropriate costume for the same. The chosen one, Subramanium mentions, "must be
prepared to come to the UK for the launch. Also, the star would have to be available if
the wax model is transported to India for PR opportunities."
Madhuri: An Elephantine Problem!
21st May 2000
Okay, so M.F.
Hussain's big time Madhuri project 'Gaja Gamini' is ready for release. But the point is
there's no one waiting for that to happen. That's right. The film has no takers as
distributors shy away dubbing this a losing proposition. Firstly, because of M.D's
marriage, secondly because they've heard what they term as a vague story idea. The two did
approach Yashraj Films to help as distributors and this seems like sticky soup, which even
Yash Chopra can't get out of. He - as most know - is rather close to Madhuri, but also
knows the film does not have too much hope. We last heard that the veteran director was
evading Ms. Dixit's (now Nene) calls trying to get himself out of this one. The only soul
who seems very hopeful of the film's fate is the white bearded (dont panic, it was
the same color even before the tensions of the film whitened him) Hussain. But
we guess he can't help it. After all, 'dil to pagal hai', na?
Madhuri, A Birthday Overseas ...
16th May 2000
Okay, so our Madhuri baby has always celebrated today (her b'day you
dodos) away in the U.S. But all these years she has been single and swinging on the 15th
of May. This time round, though, the wonder girl is 'double' and still swinging. With her
very own family of two - herself and hubby Shriram Nene - in Yankee land. We've always
known May to be her holiday season spent with her siblings and their family, but of course
this year the celebrations had to be different and special. After 'Pukar' it might be
sometime before we get to watch the lady with the million-dollar smile. But it isn't as if
she says goodbye to Bollywood. Hang around she will, but in smaller doses. As for us MD
fans, there's MF Hussain's 'Gaja Gamini' to watch out for as well as Sanjay Leela
Bhansali's 'Devdas'. Okay, Dixie dear, we're trying hard to warm up to the idea of seeing
you less. Guess, for the public, your mere mortal fans it is now going to be a matter of
enjoying pieces of a depleting cake. And while on cakes, "Happy Birthday"
anyway!
Shah Rukh, Madhuri out of Bhansali's Devdas?
15th May 2000
Bollywood is abuzz with
rumours about superstars Shah Rukh and Madhuri being kicked out of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's
forthcoming magnum opus, Devdas.
Madhuri Dixit (who was to play Chandramukhi in the film) has allegedly been dumped because
Bhansali's distributors feel that she is no longer the sure-fire B-O draw she was. What is
supposed to have clinched the argument against the diva was her insistence on claiming
airfares to and from Los Angeles.
Sources close to Bhansali
now say that Shah Rukh Khan has also been given the boot in favour of Salman Khan, the
director's eternal favourite.
The one star about whom there have been no second thoughts whatsoever is Aishwarya Rai
(who is to play Paro), who had picked up award after award for her role in Bhansali's last
Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam.
Bhansali himself has refused to either confirm or deny whether Shah Rukh had really
been replaced by Salman. In the absence of any firm comment by the filmmaker, the
Bollywood grapevine continues to buzz.
Madhuri's secy's son
15th May 2000
Madhuri Dixit's secretary Rikku Rakeshnath has already made a foray
into the world of showbiz with film production (Dil Tera Aashiq, Aarzoo). Now, his son
Karan is all geared up to enter the world of films as a hero. According to reports, the
tall youngster has signed up two films already. The first is Kuku Kohli's Dil Hai
Aashiqana. The rest of the cast of the film is yet to be finalized. In the yet-to-be
titled second film Karan is paired opposite a newcomer, Aarti Aggarwal. This film will
also mark the comeback of young director Joy Augustine of Tere Mere Sapne fame. Industry
buzz also has it that Rikku plans to cast his son as the hero in his own forthcoming
production too, opposite Amisha Patel.
Madhuri Dixit dances at Palace Grounds in Bangalore as part of the 'Diva of
Indian Cinema' concert on Sunday, May 7, 2000.
Madhuri to go easy on films
06th May 2000
Bollywood Diva Madhuri Dixit said on Saturday she would be selective in taking up
future assignments in and would like to spend more time in the United States with her
husband.
Madhuri, who is in Bangalore in connection with a live concert in the city on Sunday,
in which she will be the star performer, told newsmen that she would like to take more
challenging roles, different from those she had donned in the past.
On ''Gajagamini,'' the film made by eminent painter M F Hussain, she said it would be
released in a couple of months.
The live concert ''the Diva of Indian Cinema'' is presented by the Zee network. Besides
Amisha, Mahima Choudhary, Twinkle Khanna, Hema Sardesai, Jaspinder Narula and Sapna
Mukherjee with Aadesh Srivatsav would be performing.
The concert is billed as a tribute to Madhuri, one of the most vivacious women of the
Hindi screen.
And now, meet Madhuri the entrepreneur!
10 Apr 2000
Red Hot, that's what we will call it. A bug on the grapevine buzzed in our ears that Dr
Sriram Nene may actually consign his surgeon's glove to the closet for more lucrative
pastures. From what we heard, wife Madhuri Dixit is all dressed up to enter the big bad
world of entrepreneurship, and hubby is a partner. The bug tells us that Mads has tagged
on with a premium beauty products manufacturing company to float a whole new range herbal
skin care products. While rumours are afloat that the company in question is Emami (who
have used Sridevi and Juhi Chawla to model for their products in the past), one thing is
certain - the new range of skin toners will be named after the choli ke peechhe
girl herself. So, all you wannabe dreamgirls, who swooned when Lata Mangeshkar lent her
name to a bottle of perfume, get set for Madhuri vanishing cream. We'll tell you one thing
- with Dr Nene supervising the chemical composition of the product, it won't be bad for
your skin, at least!
Hussain's different stroke
10 Apr 2000
It could be her ebbing popularity or her marriage. But the fact is that celebrated
painter M F Husain's ardour towards Madhuri Dixit has cooled down --
notably. So, where is it focused now? Well, not too far -- at arch rival Juhi Chawla's
smiling face. Ever since he was invited for the premiere of Phir Bhi Dil Hai
Hindustani, Husain seems to have changed his tune. A few days after the show, he is
said to have painted a mural of Juhi with the film as the backdrop. If he has not painted
anything after that, it is only because Juhi did not exactly gush over the piece of art.
But then, that has not stopped the artist from chasing Ms Chawla.
Anyways, M F Hussain has moved on in life. But then, looking at it from a pragmatic
point of view, the old man had no choice, had he? While the gregarious painter has made
every effort to put up a happy face ever since his muse Madhuri Dixit tied the knot to Dr
Sriram Nene, there's no denying that Hussain's soft spot for the surgeon ki saheli
has somewhat shrunk in size. The rumoured bad blood between the two over Gajagamini
may also be a reason, but Hussain has now shifted focus onto Juhi Chawla. It all started
at the premiere of Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani where, the bugs swear, our painter
babu was smitten by chirpy Chawla's saccharine smiles. And before you could say voila!,
Hussain had already captured Juhi on his canvas. But what Hussain must have forgot in his
frenzy is that is new muse also shares the same marital status as Madhuri. For Mrs Juhi
Mehta nee Chawla, we heard, did not exactly freak out over the idea of M F Hussain
painting the town red over her beauty. The last we heard, old man Hussain is chasing Juhi
all over the town, and Mrs and Mr Mehta are none too pleased.
Life is Beautiful
1 Apr 2000
Madhuri Dixit has
rightly seen the writing on the wall. Knowing well that she is no longer in the rat race,
she has wisely decided to turn to business. She has entered into a tieup with a beauty
products manufacturer (unconfirmed sources say it is Emami) who will add a line of Madhuri
Dixit beautycare products to its existing range. Madhuri, who has witnessed the craze for
Indian herbal skin care products abroad, has chalked out a strategy for marketing this
range abroad and has decided to rope in her sister and sister-in-law as well. And if
insiders are to be believed, husband Dr Sriram Nene is supposedly seriously considering
quitting his profession. From medicine to marketing beauty products -- is that what Dr
Nene is contemplating?
Madhuri's Glowing
1 Apr 2000
There's something about Madhuri Nene, that seems to have been noticed
by true friends. She's blissfully happy being Mrs. Nene. "You know, she was the kind
who ate just because she had to," observed a really close friend. "Madhuri lived
her life and did what she did with it, only because she had to. But I've never seen her
light up the way she does, when she has to go back to hubby in the States when her work
here is over. She glows when she has to go!"
I think that's absolutely spiffy sweets. I know many star wives who
glow because of their super skin specialists!
Madhuri strikes a wrong chord
22nd Mar 2000
Here's an absolute
zapper on Madhuri Dixit. While we all know that the wedding bells have done nothing to
deter the dame's future celluloid plans, Mumbai producers are getting the hiccups on
trying to sign up the newly-wed Mrs Nene for their projects. This pot-bellied filmwallah
was heard lamenting openly over the 'extra expenses' incurred on signing the gorgeous
belle these days. You see, Madhuri has clarified, since her sasuraal is now in the
United States, any producer who wishes to sign her up should pay for her air fare to and
fro Mumbai, since she'll have to come down to tinsel town for her shoots! With the already
sky high packet of moolah Mads charges per film, the frequent air ticket expenses are
enough to send any producer's budget haywire. And given her current box office standing
and the financial crunch the industry is going through, that's not exactly a sweet music
that the dancing star is spreading for the industrywallahs.
Madhuri's dilemma about bust-thrusts
21st Mar 2000
Madhuri Dixit is learning
what it takes. Looks like the Mrs Nene tag has done it to her. The lady, who had no qualms
about doing all those bust-thrusts (read, glamorous dances) like Choli ke peechhe
and Channe ki khat mein for a hit not long ago is suddenly talking about doing
only "quality roles in good films". Furthermore, realizing her marital status
has had a direct and receding impact on her box office appeal, the Ek do teen
girl is suddenly going all out of her way to woo the Press. Contrast that to the fact that
even a year ago, Mads would hardly ever agree to talk to scribes. La Dix-Nene these days
has all the time for the Fourth Estate. No wonder, the number of Madhuri interviews in the
filmy glossies has dramatically gone up, post-marriage. That, despite the fact that our
lady hasn't scored a hit in donkey's years. A word of advice, Madhuri: given your (sexy)
image, you can't be star and do quality roles at the same time. So, find out from hubby Sriram
in which avtaar he wants to see you on screen. If at all he wants to see you on screen,
that is!
MADHURI'S MAGICAL PERFORMANCE IN CALCUTTA!
18th Mar 2000
At Netaji Subhashchandra stadium, Madhuri Dixit is supervising the
rehearsal of her stage show to be held on March 18. Actors Sanjay Kapoor and Indra Kumar
with comperes Ashutosh Rana and Shilpa Shirodkar go through their items following music
director Adesh Srivastava and Madhuri's instructions. At 6.30 p.m. the stadium is packed
to the seams. Huge banners of Madhuri Dixit Nite are put up all over the gates and walls
and there is heavy security inside and around the stadium. A group of dancers are getting
ready with their costumes. A little further away are the private make-up rooms of
artistes. Divided by a red velvet curtain, every room is self-sufficient for the
requirements of the show. Sponsored by Emami, the show has singers of the calibre of Alka
Yagnik, Sukhwinder and Vinod Rathod. Besides a medley of Rani Mukherjee, there is a
western and Indian medley by Madhuri Dixit as the grand finale. Getting the actress out of
the stadium is a difficult task but her secretary Rakeshnath as usual works a miracle.
After a three-and-a-half hour entertainment show on stage, one would expect Dixit to be
exhausted, but she is euphoric.
PUKAR OR BHUKAR
8th Mar 2000
It just had to
be the hit I'd imagined it to be, darlings! I sent George packing with enough moolah to
buy the ticket in black, if need be! I'd seen the promos and I didn't even once glance at
Prabhudeva in that 'Que sera sera...' number. According to me, the magic of Madhuri was
back!!!
Nene must be the luckiest man in the world, I thought, as I sat in my seat. I paid no
attention to George telling me that he'd got my ticket in CURRENT booking! The house
looked full!
Then the film began and as it unfolded pets, my brow glistened with cold beads of
perspiration, my blood pressure began to rise and my vision blurred... By the time it came
to Madhuri doing that last number in a peekaboo gown, I was groaning with embarrassment!
Is that why she wasn't available for the Press conference? In fact, when a colleague asked
where Mrs. Nene was, front person Rikku whispered, "She is sleeping at home. We have
tried desperately to contact her!"
I knew why. I had spied the couple the previous evening, at the Vengaboys show, boogeying
away to glory. Fatigue darlings... Fatigue!!!
Pukar
gets little response
Grossing $ 198,000 in three days, the much-hyped Pukar, which is also one
of the most expensive films made recently, doesn't look like it will be a hit.
If the usual pattern of a 40 per cent drop in the next subsequent weeks applies, Pukar
could end up with a lackluster $ 450,000. While many spectators liked the first half
of the film, they complained the second half did not flow well.
Some complained that Madhuri Dixit got shortchanged in the film.
"Her character (in the film) is very intriguing," said a Sheetal
Singh, a graduate student in New York. "But it has not been exploited well."
Some complained that Lata Mangeshkar, who lip-syncs her own song, was very
camera-conscious.
"A beautiful song has been wasted," said a cab driver. "Were there no
other artistes?"
Meanwhile, another much publicized film, Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani, which,
like Pukar , is distributed by Eros Entertainment, is heading for a decent
$ 700,000 gross, thanks to its $ 400,000-plus opening.
The audiences certainly have mixed feelings about the movie.
In its second week, it fell by about 55 per cent, taking in about $ 170,000 in
three days and $ 190,000 through the week. It grossed about $ 610,000 in its
first 10 days in America.
This week's Daily Variety did not have its box-office position listed in the
60 top-grossing films. The 60th movie, The Omega Code, grossed about
$ 45,000. Which means Phir Bhi has suffered another big decline.
With $ 350,000 grossed in England, the first film produced by its stars, Shah Rukh
Khan and Juhi Chawla, has grossed $ 1 million.
Unless Badal, or Kamal Hassan's Hey Ram turns into a big hit
exhibitors and distributors feel that they will have to wait till March 24, when David
Dhawan's Dulhan Hum Le Jayenge releases, for a upward box-office swing. Badal,
starring Bobby Deol and Rani Mukherjee and directed by Raj Kanwar (Deewana and Judai),
opens on February 11 and Hey Ram on February 18.
Dulhan Hum Le Jayenge, starring Karishma Kapoor and Salman Khan, could be just
the film to give the box-office a powerful boost.
Dhawan's films have generally performed well in North America, with their box-office
hovering between $ 300,000 and $ 400,000. But given the steady popularity of its
star cast, the movie could be a hit.
Bangalore's Windsor Manor hotel came to life when Anil Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit
shimmied and boogied into the night. Filmfare organised a Meet the stars do with the duo.
Rajkumar Santoshi and Danny Denzongpa too dotted the do. Madhuri resplendent in an ivory
saree danced to her Que sera sera number which had the hot blooded males rooting for her
and clapping loudly. While AK was being wooed by the fairer sex. Needless to natter, a
good time was had by all.
Madhuri out of Lajjya
Rajkumar Santoshi
may not, after all, make Lajjya with Madhuri Dixit following the unenthusiastic
response to his Pukar in many parts of the country. He has already finalised Anil
Kapoor and Sunny Deol for the two male leads, but is not sure whether he should sign
Karisma Kapoor or Manisha Koirala for the female lead. In the meantime, Shah Rukh Khan has
given the green signal to Santoshi for a solo-hero film. The Aamir-Shah Rukh flick, which
was to be produced and directed by Santoshi, is on hold since Aamir is busy with his home
production, Lagaan.
Sridevi Vs Madhuri, the battle outlives the issue
25th Feb 2000
By Rekha Bakshi
Though
Sridevi has virtually stopped playing the lead female role in Bollywood films and recently
married Madhuri Dixit is still captivating millions, the rivalry between the two still
rages on.
The two became daggers drawn when fighting for the number one slot and the battle has
outlived the issue.
Naturally, Sri did not like that Madhuri should be the leading lady in Pukaar.
After all, the film is made by hubby Boney Kapoor, brother of the Pukaar hero,
Anil Kapoor. But Sri had to bow before Boneys insistence and Madhuri got the role
after all.
Yes, the two ladies avoid each other like plague, which was evident during the shooting
for Pukaar. So, Sri decided not to attend Pukaars launch party in
Mumbai. But she finally turned up for the event, perhaps not wishing to give Boneys
ex-wife, Mona Kapoor, any opportunity to cuddle up to Boney, or the press a chance to
speculate.
Sri turned up for the party and Madhuri decided at the last minute that she was too tired
to make it. It took quite some doing to convince Madhuri that Sri is no longer in films
and there is no longer any point in the rivalry.
So Madhuri and Sri were seen together at the Pukaar Press Conference in Delhi,
but still interrupting and cutting each other short.
Of Vajpayee, Kargil and the film Pukaar
17th Feb 2000
By Rekha Bakshi
The
dialouge mouthed by hero Anil Kapoor to a Pakistani agent in the patriotic action thriller
Pukaar, Kargil ka ek pathar nahin hila sake aur Kashmir ke seb khanne ke
khwab dekh rahe ho,was approved by Prime Minister Vajpayee, forcing the Indian Film
Censors to do a double take and allow it in the film.
God alone knows why the Censors had snipped off the dialouge in the first place.
But when Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee and Home Minister L K Advani saw
Pukaar and enjoyed it, the filmmaker Raj Kumar Santoshi, told them about what
the Censors had done.
Vajpayee found the dialouge appropriate. Santoshi then appealed to the Censor Board
Tribunal against the cut, and this dialouge is back in the film now being shown.
The one liner spoken by Anil Kapoor puts the position in Kashmir rather succinctly, and is
said to be fetching a lot of audience applause.
A front page report in Midday has described Sriram Nene, the NRI surgeon as Mr Madhuri
Dixit. I don't know how he would take it. Anyone else would feel insulted. Whenever an
anonymous face has married a film heroine, the result has been a disaster.
And the reason is ego clash. Traditionally, the man is supposed to be superior to the
woman. A situation where he has to play an inferior role creates ego problems for him. It
has happened to Shobhna Samrath (Kajol's grand mother), Nutan, Tanuja, Sadhna, Meena
Kumari, Mumtaz, Rekha...and many others.
I have seen how Bindu's husband Champak Zaveri has been called Mr Bindu, how Rekha's
husband Mukesh Agarwal has seemed neglected and ended up killing himself with her dupatta.
Happily, there are the other types too. Successful professionals and big industrialists.
Sharmila (Nawab of Pataudi) Tagore, Sangeeta (Azhharuddin) Bijlani, Tina (Anil Ambani)
Munim, Juhi (Jay Mehta) Chawla...
Madhuri too has married a successful surgeon. Successful but faceless. Will he be able to
take up the new title: Mr Madhuri Dixit?
Move over M F Hussain, now the PM loves Madhuri (2/10/00)
While still on the topic of politicians and Bollywood films,
Pukar
producer Boney Kapoor had a pleasant surprise last week when Prime Minister Atal Behari
Vajpayee and Home Minister Lal Krishna Advani both walked in to watch his movie at the
Delhi premiere. While Advani is a self-confessed movie buff (remember how he escaped
the security cordon around him and managed to sneak into a Delhi theatre to watch Titanic
with his wife two years back?), the PM had promised to drop in for a half hour only. But
both statesmen stayed put for the whole movie and later declared that they loved it. Do we
take that as further proof of Madhuri's appeal remaining unscathed by marriage?
Madhuri - Hale, Hearty and Happy!
Rumours will be rumours after all -- and thank heaven for that. And now, thanks to the
Internet, the sources are that many more.
Like this one that took our breath away last week. A horrendous item on some website (The
Mad 'bout Madhuri page) that spoke about how the beautiful Madhuri Dixit had met with a
ghastly accident in Chicago, in the US of A and was in a not so stable condition. In fact,
the frantic emails being sent back and forth by the Indian community were soon actually
reported by Chicago TV - Asia which even quoted a 'hospital spokesperson' that she was
'serious'. It reported that MD was in her BMW on Interstate highway 155 when she skidded
onto the left lane (they drive on the right side in the US remember?) and met with a head
on collision with a Jeep. The Naperville police was supposed to have air-lifted her to the
Chicago hospital, the report further stated.
Naturally, we were on the phone with la Mads and were relieved to discover that the
lady was in the midst of one of her many pre-Pukar interviews -- hale and hearty. It was
momma Dixit who informed us that the rumour had been around for a while now -- and that it
should be nipped in the bud. Now we've done that, let's wish Mads all the best for her
first release after shaadi -- 'Pukar' hits the screens today -- and may the rumour mongers
stew in their own web, so there.

Madhuri caught in a bitchy web (2/9/00)
What was all that sudden hungama on bitch.com about Madhuri Dixit's breaking her neck in a
"ghastly accident" at Chicago? It so happened that some small-timer
amateurish website, peddling bitchy lies in the name of sensational news, floated the item
that Mads was down after the "accident", and even went on to quote doctors who
said her "condition was serious". The "details" reported by the site,
and later even picked up as a cue by a Chicago TV station, said Madhuri's BMW had skidded
onto the wrong lane of a highway and collided head-on with another vehicle. Such filmy
overdrive of imagination! Enough to put even Bollywood filmmakers to shame. For, sure
enough, when we contacted our moles in tinsel town, we were told the just-married Mrs Nene
was going great guns, with not a scratch on herself by way of an accident. Madhuri lovers
can, therefore, relax. If anything, the lady was just caught in the bitchy web!
Israelis go mad for Dil To Pagal Hai
08th Feb 2000
By Wanderer
Two
years ago Dil To Pagal Hai became a huge box office hit in India. Now the film is
making waves in an unusual territory for Hindi films. According to reports DTPH has become
a big success in Israel.
The Shahrukh Khan-Madhuri Dixit-Karisma Kapoor starrer Dil To Pagal Hai is reported
to be running to full houses for the fifth successive week in running. The film has
already been screened in Jerusalem and is set for release in another city, Haifa.
The success of DTPH may open market for Hindi films in Israel. The main attraction seems
to be the songs of the love story that were a big hit with the Indian young hearts.
The title song of the film is very popular in Israel. It can be heard blaring out of every
other window in Tel Aviv, its reported. Sub titled in Hebrew, the huge colorful
posters of Halev Mistagya (Hebrew translation for Pagal Dil or Crazy
Heart) are seen plastered all over the streets of Tel Aviv.

Frozen Madhuri flares up at Anil (2/8/00)
Recollect that by-now famous scene in Pukar, where Madhuri Dixit lets the pallu
of her sari flow, as a starstruck Anil Kapoor looks on. All of it shot on the snowy
Alaskan terrain. Well, there's this bit of of scoop behind the scene. Apparently Anil
Kapoor got a wee bit too inspired by the locale and the lady's beauty - he insisted, for
sake for aesthetics, that a chopper be flown above Madhuri's head (out of the frame, of
course) so that the right amount of wind would be generated for the pallu to flow.
And then it happened. The sub-zero cold and her thin chiffon sari was enough to flare up
the generally cool Mads. She made it known in clear terms that she would give just one
take in those conditions, frozen as she was, or else pack up for good. Message registered
the brothers Kapoor and director Rajkumar Santoshi quickly wrapped up the shot before
Volcano Madhuri really erupted owing to the the frozen environs. Well, well, hell hath no
fury as a woman frozen, right?!
Mrs Nene's no-no stumps secretary (2/7/00)
We've got some fresh juice
about the souring relationship between Madhuri Nene nee Dixit and her secretary for
donkey's years, Rikku. It came as a bolt from the blue to us, given the hunky dory
relationship our star secretary shared with his memsaab for all these years. If
Rikku has stuck onto Mads through storm and calm, Madhuri has bailed out Rikku every time
the production bug bit the guy, by agreeing to do his films at a drastically slashed
price. Even at Madhuri's hush-hush wedding, Rikku was one of the very few people from
Mumbai who were exclusively invited. So, what's wrong now? Apparently, Rikku wanted to
launch his daughter as the heroine of his next film, but most Bollywood financiers weren't
impressed with the idea. Rikku then turned to Madhuri, hoping the lady would bail him
again, this time helping him with finance and, who knows, a sizzling guest appearance
number perhaps. We don't know if it was Mr or Mrs Nene who sounded the no-no. But the
denial certainly has stumped Rikku's grand plan about his beti's future.
Madhuri and sex education! (1/31/99)
What has marriage to Dr Sriram Nene taught Madhuri Dixit? Going by a press release to
Maharashtra government officials, the dhak-dhak lady has finally learned from her
hubby that AIDS is a killer disease! Fresh from her new education, Madhuri has now
volunteered to act in some TV newsreels to help spread awareness on the disease. All free
of cost.
A film star doing such social work in her free time comes as a refreshing change from the
current trend of stars disgracing their fans by dancing in weddings for hefty pay packets.
But pray, why did it need the good cardiologist to educate the queen bee on the deadly
virus? Is it because a New York doctor knows more about AIDS than the suffering millions
in India? Or was it just...umm...sex education...from a loving hubby?!
Madhuri Dixit's Accident in CHICAGO (TV ASIA) (1/27/99)
Film star Maduri Dixit had an accident nearher Chicago home and is in critical
condition. The hospital spokesperson said that she will be able to make it, but insiders
say she has very little or no hope.
Ms. Dixit was driving her BMW on interstate I-55 when she skidded on the left lane and
hit an oncoming Jeep head-on. Naperville police attended to the scene immediately
and she was air-lifted to the local hospital. Her husband, a renowned Chicago doctor
rushed to her side upon hearing the news. The Jeep driver escaped with minor injuries and
is being treated at the same hospital.
Ms. Dixit is well known for her movies in Indian Bollywood. Her movies like Tezaab, Dil
and to more recently Hum Aap ke Hain Kaun were a big hit. "We all hope the Ek Do Teen
girl will get well soon" said Sonal, one of the many fans waiting outside the Chicago
hospital to hear the latest news about Ms. Dixit.
Saif - Madhuri and the belly of the matter (01/17/'00)
It seems there is no stopping the ever-growing Madhuri Dixit fan brigade, folks. Not even
after the gorgeous dame has tied the knot and is all set to fly saat samundar paar with
hubby dearest, Sriram Nene. The latest to swoon over the diva's beauty is none other than
Bollywood's latest star Khan. We're talking about chhote nawaab saab, Saif Ali Khan. He
was already overboard praising Madhuri's ethereal looks and grace, ever since the two
worked together in Aarzoo, earlier this year.
And now, an industry birdie chirped to us that Saif has gushingly admitted that his
ultimate dream in life is to - hold your breath - kiss Madhuri's pretty navel!
We can't blame Saif. After all, its normal for a guy to be floored by the belly that
launched a zillion dreams. But honestly speaking, Saif boy, isn't it a bit too late in the
day for such a puppy crush, or is it?
Webmaster's remarks: My ambitions aren't that high, if you know what I mean :-)
Anyways, if there is a goalie, that doesn't mean you can't 'score'.
Sridevi, Madhuri bury the hatchet
Boney
Kapoor has just done the casting coup of the new millennium. He has brought the dhak
dhak sensation Madhuri Dixit and the gorgeous-than-ever-before Sridevi, together on
the same platform. No, this is not the lead female cast of some new film that the
flamboyant producer is launching. But for all those who thought getting the erstwhile arch
rival queen bees to put their acts together for the same goal was impossible - well, Boney
has done the impossible.
Sri and Mads are going overboard co-operating with each other to ensure Boney's new
production, Pukar, seizes popular imagination like hell before its early February
release. Madhuri had
already done her bit on screen, sizzling with a wonderful performance as Pukar's
heroine (if you've watched the TV promos of the film, you know what we mean). But now,
Sexy Dixie is sparing all the time Boney wants for the nationwide pre-release publicity
functions of the film. That, despite her personal life taking a busy turn after marriage.
Never one to be outdone, Sridevi, too, has gone all out for hubby Boney. She readily
agreed to participate in the publicity schedules of Pukar something she
never did even for her own films in her heydays. And that, despite Pukar being
rival Madhuri's first film post-marriage as a heroine. Come to think of it, there was a
time not long ago when the two beautiful people were not even on talking terms! But we
guess, if Boney can successfully balance a personal life between his two fiery wives, Mona
and Sri, what's the tough deal for him to handle the two supercats in the professional
arena?!
Madhuri Dixit to appear at court on obscenity charge (01/15/00)
A Mumbai court ordered leading film actresses -- Madhuri Dixit, Karisma Kapoor, Juhi
Chawla, Raveena Tandon, Tabu and Mamta Kulkarni -- to appear in person on February 16 next
in a case of alleged obscenity filed against them.
Hearing a complaint filed by Archana Ben, a resident of Baroda, the metropolitan
magistrate Mohan Puranik warned that if they failed to appear in person on that day,
non-bailable warrants would be issued against them. The complaint was initially filed in
the court of judicial magistrate first class at Baroda for offence under section 292 IPC
(obscenity).
However, one of the stars moved the Supreme Court for quashing the complaint. The apex
court ordered the transfer of case to Mumbai on the jurisdiction issue. The complainant
alleged that the actresses had acted in an obscene manner in songs whose numbers were also
not in keeping with decent langauage and good taste. The complainant quoted songs from
films "Raja Babu", "Vijay Path" and "Khalnayak" to drive
home her allegations about obscene wordings and gestures.
Madhuri's prescription for Doctor Nene!
Dr Sriram Nene has been saying this forever - the only Hindi film he ever saw till Madhuri
Dixit happened in his life was Amar Akbar Anthony (for the record, he found it "very
boring"!). No wonder, the only celeb he recognized at the wedding reception was
Amitabh Bachchan!
Post-Madhuri, of course, he has also seen M F Hussain's forthcoming
Gajagamini which we, ordinary mortals, have not yet seen. And no, Nene saab is not
commenting over whether he liked (or disliked) the film. An industry bug, however, gave us
some inside info: so stumped was the dear doctor with certain 'hot' scenes of wifey
dearest in Hussain's work of art, that he is trying his level best to see that the film is
not released - at least, not yet when his marriage is still so young.
Meanwhile, Mads is reportedly going all out trying to cinematically educate hubby dearest.
For one, she has decided to show him her films on video one by one, starting with her best
performances like Mrityudand, Prem Pratigya, Sangeet and Hum Aapke Hain Koun?, and then
moving on to - well - hotter stuff such as Khalnayak, Parinda and Beta. Good thinking,
Mads. At least, that way doctor saab's dil won't go dhak dhak too fast all at once!
Post-Madhuri, of course, he has also seen M F Hussain's forthcoming Gajagamini which we,

Madhuri's sweet delight
Mrs Madhuri Nene is busy as hell these days. No, the ek do teen girl has not gone on a
film-signing spree, post-marriage to Dr Sriram Nene. Rather, Mads is on a totally new trip
these days, utilising all the time in the world in developing her new hobby - making
mithai for her in-laws! That's sweet! Meanwhile the news on the gorgeous screen diva and
her hubby is that while Madhuri spends time preparing fresh recipes for her in-laws, hubby
Nene has already flown back to L.A., his workplace. The lovey-dovey couple will go back
for a second honeymoon to an undisclosed location soon and probably fly off to the States
thereafter, to set up the new lovenest. That's sweeter!
Sajan ki Sajni is back in Bollywood
04th Jan 2000
Good news for Madhuri Dixit fans. The newly-wed Dhak Dhak girl is back in Bollywood.
These days Madhuri shuttles between the US and Mumbai to juggle her career with her
marriage.
Bollywood insiders say that producer Boney Kapoor wants to cast Madhuri in remake of a
Tamil flick.
The film offers Madhuri a mature role of a mother with two kids. Boney is waiting for
Madhuri's nod to go ahead with the project.
Madhuri's Fleeting Public Appearance For Rikku's Bash!
So our favourite Madhuri
Dixit is now in the first flush of being Mrs. Madhuri Nene (lucky hubby Sriram), but it
doesn't mean she should hide herself away from all her fans who are now clamouring for her
more than ever. Mads has cut down her public appearances to the barest minimum. But she
hasn't forgotten her old loyals. Recently, at the silver wedding anniversary of her
secretary-cum-producer Rikku, Madhuri turned up in all her starry glory at the Sun'n'Sand
hotel in Juhu to congratulate the couple. She was glowing, happy and beautiful as always.
And she happily accepted all the felicitations coming her way from the other guests
(Rakesh Roshan, Randhir Kapoor, Ramesh Taurani, Surinder Kapoor, Mohan Kumar, etc.) well,
here's wishing the Nenes an eternally blissful married life. Right?
